Civil Construction Heavy Duty Mechanic

Milestone Equipment Contracting Inc is currently seeking a motivated and experienced heavy-duty mechanic to join our dynamic team. The successful candidate will be responsible for performing maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on a variety of heavy equipment, including but not limited to excavators, bulldozers, loaders, and graders. The heavy-duty mechanic will be tasked with troubleshooting mechanical issues, identifying faulty components, and performing necessary repairs to ensure the safe and efficient operation of equipment. Responsibilities also include conducting regular inspections, preventative maintenance, and adhering to manufacturer specifications and safety protocols. The ideal candidate will have a strong mechanical aptitude, relevant experience in heavy equipment maintenance, and a commitment to upholding quality standards and safety practices.
Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Equipment Maintenance: Perform scheduled maintenance tasks on heavy equipment, including inspections, lubrication, and fluid changes, to ensure optimal performance and longevity.
  • Diagnostics: Use diagnostic tools and techniques to identify mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues with heavy equipment and determine the appropriate course of action for repairs.
  • Repairs: Perform repairs on heavy equipment, including engine overhauls, transmission repairs, brake replacements, and hydraulic system repairs, following manufacturer specifications and safety protocols.
  • Troubleshooting: Analyze symptoms and troubleshoot problems with heavy equipment to determine root causes and develop effective solutions to resolve issues efficiently.
  • Parts Replacement: Remove and replace faulty components, such as belts, hoses, bearings, and seals, with new or refurbished parts to restore equipment functionality.
  • Welding and Fabrication: Conduct welding and fabrication tasks to repair or modify heavy equipment components, structures, and attachments as needed.
  • Documentation: Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, repairs performed, parts used, and hours worked on each piece of equipment to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and warranty coverage.
  • Safety Compliance: Adhere to safety protocols and regulations while performing maintenance and repairs on heavy equipment to prevent accidents, injuries, and property damage.
  • Training and Mentorship: Provide guidance and training to less experienced mechanics or apprentices, sharing knowledge and expertise to support their professional development and growth.
  • Continuous Improvement: Identify opportunities for process improvement and efficiency gains in maintenance procedures, tools, and techniques, and make recommendations for implementation.
  • Communication: Communicate effectively with supervisors, colleagues, and equipment operators to provide updates on maintenance activities, repair timelines, and equipment status.
  • Emergency Response: Respond promptly to equipment breakdowns and emergencies, troubleshoot issues on-site, and perform necessary repairs to minimize downtime and ensure operational continuity.

Qualifications & Skill Requirements:

  • Preference given to ticketed journeyperson
  • Will consider 3rd or 4th year apprentice
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent. Completion of a formal apprenticeship program in heavy-duty equipment mechanics or a related field is typically required.
  • Experience: Minimum 5+ years of practical experience as a heavy-duty mechanic, with expertise in diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining heavy equipment, such as excavators, bulldozers, loaders, and graders.
  • Mechanical Aptitude: Strong mechanical aptitude and proficiency in diagnosing and troubleshooting mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems in heavy equipment.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in using diagnostic tools, equipment, and software to identify and resolve mechanical issues efficiently. Knowledge of welding and fabrication techniques may be beneficial.
  • Safety Awareness: Thorough understanding of safety protocols and regulations related to heavy equipment maintenance and repair, with a commitment to upholding safety standards in the workplace.
  • Attention to Detail: Meticulous attention to detail to perform accurate diagnostics, repairs, and maintenance tasks, ensuring that equipment operates safely and efficiently.
  • Problem-Solving Abilities: Strong problem-solving skills to analyze symptoms, diagnose issues, and develop effective solutions to repair heavy equipment and minimize downtime.
  • Physical Fitness: Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting heavy objects of up to 50lbs, bending, kneeling, and working in various weather conditions.
  • Communication Skills: Effective communication skills to interact with colleagues, supervisors, and equipment operators, conveying technical information clearly and concisely.
  • Time Management: Excellent organizational and time management skills to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and manage workload effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Adaptability: Flexibility to adapt to changing work environments, priorities, and requirements, and willingness to learn and apply new skills as needed.
  • Valid BC driver's license, Class 1 is considered an asset
