What is the opportunity?

Entuitive is seeking a highly motivated and entrepreneurial Senior Structural Engineer who will work on small and medium projects and assist in maintaining a high level of service for the structural practice at Entuitive. The position will also involve growing our Special Projects team in Ottawa by working closely with the business development team and Entuitive's other special projects teams. The position will work closely with other service groups at Entuitive to ensure consistent, consolidated, and leading- edge service across the firm.

What is Special Projects?

The Special Project groups at Entuitive focus on small to medium projects of varying degrees of complexity requiring skills that span many areas of structural engineering. Special project work often involves adding to or modifying existing buildings or working with design teams to provide structural design for unique bespoke requirements. The design work crosses all structural materials and building types and often involves understanding and working with antiquated structural systems or working with limited information on the existing structural system. The special projects teams see projects through from client intent all the way through design and construction on-site. Special project engineers are masters at time management, working on multiple projects at a time and respond well to projects with tight timelines.

What will you do?

  • Deliver special projects work including:
    • Attendance at client meetings from initial conception throughout the entire project
    • Development of internal project budgets and generation of fee proposals
    • Review of existing structures to determine as-built construction details
    • Assessments of existing structure for changes and additions and to assess for upgrades or restoration requirements.
    • Work with architects and other consultants to prepare detailed structural designs
    • Work with Entuitive technologists to develop drawings for permit, tender and construction.
    • Review of in progress works on construction sites for compliance to issued documents.
    • Attendance at construction progress meetings to provide consultation and updates to the project team
    • Write reports based on observations, assessments, and key findings
    • Coordinate and review of submittals and shop drawings during construction phase
  • Pursue special projects growth opportunities by:
    • Attracting new clients through business development initiatives; grow the special project business and win work
    • Attend client meetings, events, and business development opportunities to grow your network
    • With the guidance of the Entuitive business development, marketing and proposal teams, research and respond to proposal requests from clients
  • Be responsible for the financial performance of projects including monitoring of internal project costs and review of monthly invoicing ensuring budgets are maintained
  • Mentor and train junior staff in technical aspects of structural design and practical aspects of project delivery
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements

What do you need to succeed?

  • A degree in civil engineering with a focus on structural engineering
  • 7+ years of industry-related experience
  • P.Eng. designation required
  • Experience in business development and writing proposals
  • Experience in structural design and/or construction engineering for buildings
  • Working with existing facilities is considered an asset
  • Strong communication skills both verbal and written with the ability to work with people at all levels including project stakeholders and clients
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities and deliverables on an ongoing basis
  • Working knowledge of construction materials and products used in building construction, with a focus on concrete, steel, wood, and masonry as well as historical materials and structural systems
  • Working knowledge and ability to use various programs such as SAP, SAFE, Woodworks, Bluebeam, Hilti Profis
  • An entrepreneurial spirit willing to make something their own and wanting to build a team.
  • A valid driver's license and access to a vehicle is required
  • Knowledge and interest related to embodied carbon is considered an asset
