Reporting to the CEO, as the General Legal Counsel specializing in Real Estate and Land Use Planning, you will be responsible for overseeing all legal matters related to real estate transactions, land acquisition, development projects, and regulatory compliance. Your role will be critical in providing strategic legal guidance, ensuring adherence to laws and regulations, and mitigating legal risks to support the company's real estate and land use planning objectives.

What you will do:

Legal Strategy Development:

Develop and implement legal strategies to support the company's real estate and land use planning initiatives.

Provide expert advice on legal matters related to property acquisitions, land development, zoning regulations, and environmental compliance.

Transaction Oversight:

Review, negotiate, and finalize contracts, leases, and agreements related to real estate transactions in conjunction with the real estate team.

Conduct due diligence investigations on properties to assess legal risks and ensure compliance with laws and regulations.

Regulatory Compliance:

Monitor changes in real estate laws, regulations, and zoning ordinances to ensure compliance and mitigate legal risks.

Advise internal stakeholders on regulatory requirements and potential impacts on real estate projects.

Respond to Freedom of Information (FOI) requests.

Litigation Management:

Oversee and manage real estate-related litigation and disputes, including contract disputes, property disputes, and regulatory violations.

Oversee and manage matters at the Ontario Land Tribunal.

Collaborate with external legal counsel as necessary to represent the company's interests in legal proceedings.

Risk Management:

Identify potential legal risks and liabilities associated with real estate transactions and development projects.

Develop risk mitigation strategies and recommend appropriate insurance coverage to protect the company's interests.

Stakeholder Communication:

Serve as the primary point of contact for legal inquiries related to real estate and land use planning matters.

Communicate effectively with internal stakeholders, external partners, government agencies, and regulatory bodies.

Requirements

What you will have:

Education: Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school. Admission to the bar in the relevant jurisdiction(s).

Experience: Minimum of 10 years of relevant legal experience, with a focus on real estate law, land use planning, and commercial transactions. Previous experience in a leadership or managerial role preferred. Experience working on Podium schools or institutional uses in mixed-use developments.

Expertise: In-depth knowledge of real estate law, land use planning law, and environmental laws. Strong understanding of contract law and transactional processes. Knowledge of the Education Act Ontario.

Analytical Skills: Ability to analyze complex legal issues, identify potential risks, and formulate strategic solutions.

Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate legal concepts clearly and effectively to diverse audiences.

Negotiation: Proven negotiation skills with the ability to achieve favorable outcomes in real estate transactions and legal disputes.

Leadership: Strong leadership and decision-making abilities.

Adaptability: Ability to adapt to changing legal and business environments, demonstrating flexibility and resourcefulness.

Integrity: High ethical standards and a commitment to upholding legal and professional integrity in all dealings.
