We are looking to add an Assistant Controller to our team!
Position Title: Assistant Controller
Reports to: Corporate Controller
Department: Finance & Accounting
Work Location: Leduc, Alberta office
Work Duration: This is a 6 month contract, commencing January 2, 2025
Position Summary
The Assistant Controller plays a pivotal role in the accounting operations of the KBL Group of Companies, reporting directly to the Corporate Controller. This position is essential for ensuring the timely and accurate production of financial information within the organization. The Assistant Controller will maintain a robust framework of internal controls and budgeting processes aimed at mitigating risks, enhancing the precision of reported financial results, and ensuring compliance with generally accepted accounting principles. This is a temporary 6 month contract position, commencing on January 2, 2025.
Duties and Responsibilities
Transactional Support:
· Serve as the Sage 300 subject matter expert, demonstrating deep knowledge of transactional flows within business processes.
· Drive continuous improvement in the financial close process by evaluating monthly execution, identifying gaps, advising on improvements, and reallocating tasks within the administration team.
· Ensure monthly reconciliation of balance sheet accounts, addressing reconciling items promptly.
· Oversee capital expenditure and fixed asset accounting, including reporting, reconciliation, and loan accounting processes.
· Ensure the validity, completeness, and accuracy of accrued revenue, work-in-progress (WIP), and accrued liabilities transactions.
· Review intercompany accounts across the Group to ensure accuracy and completeness, facilitating reconciliations and consolidation entries.
· Contribute to the treasury function by preparing weekly cash flow forecasts, authorizing payments, and calculating borrowing covenants and margining reports.
· Prepare financial reports for partnerships and joint ventures for review by the Corporate Controller on a quarterly basis.
· Ensure corporate tax and regulatory compliance by preparing working papers for tax returns and timely remittances.
Analytical and Insight Support:
· Assist in maintaining operational and overhead templates, analyzing historical data, and engaging with Business Unit Managers.
· Perform variance analysis on business unit performance and balance sheet fluctuations, investigating significant discrepancies.
· Support project accounting by developing structured processes to ensure compliance with internal policies and accounting principles.
Physical Requirements
· Long periods of sitting, data entry, computer work for extended periods. You are responsible to work in a safe and proper manner utilizing Workplace Ergonomics to avoid injury to oneself and to others.
Work Environment
· There is a possibility of cuts, bruises, straining, disease and /or severe injury if safe work practices are not followed.
· Work is primarily carried out indoors, but at times you may be required to go outside. Therefore, there can be exposure to extreme weather in the winter months. There can be exposure to dust, noise, mud, water, smoke, and bacteria
Qualifications
· Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA designation required.
· Preferred experience in Waste Management, Environmental Services, or Construction industries.
· Minimum of 5 years in an Assistant Controller or similar role, with strong full-cycle accounting experience.
· Proficiency in ERP systems, particularly Sage 300, and advanced skills in Microsoft Office 365 applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Teams, Outlook, SharePoint).
· Attention to detail with a commitment to timeliness and accuracy.
· Strong understanding of ASPE and generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
· Supervisory experience is a plus, along with exposure to system implementation, change management, post-acquisition integration, and financial modeling.
· Excellent multitasking abilities with a focus on prioritization and meeting deadlines.
