Reports to: Program Managers

Based at: Multiple Locations

Hours: Flexible

Start Date: Immediately

Description:

Youth Support Volunteers at SCP provide critical support to youth that are transitioning to independent living, helping them build essential life skills, and access the resources that they need in the community. succeed in their educational pursuits. As part of a dedicated team, you will work closely with youth aged 16-24 to assist in creating a safe, supportive, and growth-focused environment. This role involves offering guidance, encouragement, and mentoring while supporting youth with their daily activities, studies, and personal development.

Qualifications (Education & Experience)

  • Undergraduate or graduate students in Education related programs, Psychology, Social Work and related programs.
  • Previous volunteer or work experience with youth is preferred, but not required.

Requirements (Skills & Competencies)

  • Valid Driver's License with Driver's Abstract
  • Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Clearance
  • Cultural awareness required
  • Passion for supporting and empowering at-risk youth.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to handle challenging behaviours with patience, empathy, and professionalism.
  • Basic understanding of child/youth development and trauma-informed care is an asset.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and contribute positively to group dynamics.

Duties & Responsibilities (Outcomes to be monitored quarterly)

Life Skills Support:

  • Assist youth in developing practical life skills, such as budgeting, accessing resources, employment skills, in one-to-one or group settings.
  • Promote problem-solving abilities, decision-making, and coping strategies for real-life challenges.
  • Create lesson plans and facilitate life skills groups.

Behaviour Modelling:

  • Encourage positive behaviour through mentoring, role modelling, and consistent feedback.
  • Support youth in managing emotions, controlling impulses, and practicing conflict resolution.
  • Work closely with the team to implement individualized behaviour plans and provide regular progress updates.

Education/Studies Assistance:

  • Help youth with homework, studying, and understanding classroom assignments.
  • Provide one-on-one or group tutoring in specific subjects where needed.

Mentorship and Emotional Support:

  • Build trusting relationships with youth by offering a safe space to discuss their challenges and aspirations.
  • Listen empathetically and provide encouragement and guidance tailored to individual needs.

Time Commitment:

  • Flexible hours with availability during evenings and weekends preferred.
  • Regular schedule can be created within your availability.
