Job Description:

Note: Start date is September 2025, and this is a 12-month position.

An opportunity currently exists for a Co-Op Student in the Substations Project Engineering team within the Project Development Department of AltaLink. Reporting to the Manager, Substations Engineering the successful candidate will work with internal and external technical staff to ensure that all additions, replacements, and modifications to AltaLink's transmission assets meet quality standards and appropriately integrate into Alberta's high voltage transmission system. As such, this individual will be provided an opportunity to work and train with senior engineers who are responsible for providing technical leadership and work with other disciplines and technical specialists at all critical project phases from conceptual, scoping, design, construction, acceptance, and energization. The candidate will work collaboratively with other departments in the company such as Asset Management, Project Delivery, and other specialists. In this position, the individual will support Project Managers and Designers by preparing specifications for equipment procurement to ensure materials and documentation are available in time for project execution. Additionally, the candidate will be responsible for preparing project scoping and performing engineering design reviews. This position will appeal to individuals with a transmission utility background who are looking for the opportunity to develop their engineering and leadership talents in a dynamic utility environment.

Responsibilities:

The selected individual will be working with experienced senior engineers to:

  • Develop Design Base Memorandums (DBMs), or project proposals with input from other disciplines.
  • Provide timely and effective technical input into conceptual engineering, project scoping, estimating, construction and energization.
  • Provide technical direction (coordinating with Senior Engineers) and answer contractors questions to ensure each project meets acceptable standards for operability, functionality, maintainability, reliability, durability, and safety.
  • Participate in the development of functional criteria and standards.
  • Create technical equipment specifications and review technical drawings and specifications to ensure they meet AltaLink Standards (along with the Senior Engineers)
  • Implement technical designs in support of projects (along with the Senior Engineers).
  • Maintain effective working relationships with suppliers, partners and internal clients that result in growing understanding, good decisions, and effective cooperation.

Requirements

  • A university student enrolled in their second or third year at a recognized University working towards a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering.
  • Qualifies for registration as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA).
  • Minimum of 1 year of medium or high voltage utility experience such as: Equipment layout, HV bus layout.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with ability to work in a team environment, positively influence others, and develop strong internal and external relationships.
  • Excellent analytical skills.
  • Strong written, reporting, graphical and oral presentation skills.
  • Proven track record of good performance and attendance.
  • Experience with (or at least a technical understanding of), the following:
  • Substation and bus layouts.
  • High Voltage Power Equipment (including current transformers, instrument transformers, disconnect switches, circuit breakers and surge arrestors).
  • AC and DC supplies.
  • General knowledge of designing of Protection and control schemes.
  • General knowledge of industry standards such as CSA, IEC, IEEE, ANSI.
