Job Summary

Reporting to the Senior Commercial Manager, the Business Analyst is accountable for the publication of the Profit & Loss reports, calculating revenue, costs, and financial impacts arising from energy settlements and contracts. The role will assess contract performance, identify potential risks, and provide insights on the financial implications of contractual terms. Collaborating with real-time traders, finance, legal, and operations teams, the role will ensure accurate reporting and support decision-making to optimize profitability.

Key Responsibilities

  • Analyze IESO settlement data for discrepancies and implement notice of disagreement or dispute process with the IESO
  • Prepare and submit start-up costs for recovery under the IESO generation cost guarantee program
  • Develop and produce daily and monthly plant Profit & Loss reports as well as plant performance and availability reports
  • Develop and maintain settlement tools, identifying tool deficiencies and recommending and implementing solutions
  • Assist in developing user requirements for application software used in settlement processes, and perform acceptance testing to ensure system functionality
  • Monitor and Report IESO contracts related filing requirements
  • Monitor rate changes, contract escalation factors and apply to settlement tools
  • Compile responses to audit inquiries from internal/external stakeholders
  • Reconcile monthly invoices/statements for gas, power, storage, transportation and distribution agreements
  • Maintain records of contracts and invoices/statements
  • Highlight key plant performance issues and conduct analysis
  • Track emissions relative to allocated allowances or emission standards
  • Conduct impact analysis on key contractual performance obligations, market and regulatory initiatives
  • Perform other duties as required

Qualifications & Education

  • Undergraduate degree or other applicable education and experience
  • Understanding of the Ontario Electricity Market administered by the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) from the perspective of a power generator, including the following aspects:
    • Market participation through offering, scheduling and dispatch
    • IESO market rules
    • Communication protocols with the IESO
    • Settlements of IESO market and contract revenues and production
  • Basic understanding of the operation of Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) power plants fuelled by natural gas an asset
  • Strong business and commercial acumen
  • Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills
  • Proficient with Microsoft Excel for data management and reporting and building models and software tools to support commercial activities
  • Programming and/or analytical skills (VBA, SQL)
  • Excellent English communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Excellent general computer and technology skills in order to quickly learn and use various software and web-based applications required to interact with gas and power markets
