About the Role:
CASA Mental Health Classrooms are CASA's new model for school-based mental health service. The program addresses the need for services closer to students by bridging a child's mental health and school needs, through a coordinated approach by a mental health team and a teacher. CASA Classrooms are delivered in partnership with the Government of Alberta, community partners and school divisions.
The Mental Health Nurse will:
  • Work collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team to provide and coordinate services such as nursing assessments, plans of care, medication administration, teaching, telephone follow-up and health promotion.
  • Complete appropriate nursing assessments (physical and psychosocial) to identify mental health concerns and current risks. This includes:
    • Incorporating objective findings such as laboratory results, diagnostic findings, specialist reports and past history.
    • Integrating assessment and other data to establish appropriate long and short-term goals, and providing nursing interventions to promote, maintain and restore health.
  • Monitor, evaluate and modify nursing care plans based on effectiveness of interventions and/or changes in condition or environment, in collaboration with the patient and care team.
  • Provide information and instructions to assist others in understanding the clinical condition, ongoing care and management.
  • Assist with individual or group therapy.
  • Act as a resource by providing training to team members to assist in their professional development, and participating in the development of children's mental health teaching and resource materials.
  • Identify service delivery improvements and suggest enhancements with the lens of evidence-informed practice and CASA's strategic and operational plans.
  • Help identify evaluation measures and outcomes in consultation with the Program Manager.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in nursing or Diploma in psychiatric nursing.
  • A minimum of three to five years of recent pediatric experience in an ambulatory care setting which has included the care and management of children with mental health problems. Acute care experience in children's mental health would be an asset.
  • Must be a member in good standing with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta or College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Alberta.
  • Knowledge of the Health Information and Protection of Privacy Information Acts in addition to professional organization's ethics and standards of practice.
  • Ability to apply theoretical knowledge in a clinical setting, utilize relevant research findings in daily nursing practice, identify barriers and facilitate solution development, and to work independently and within a team to prioritize work activities.
  • Knowledge of family therapy and group therapy is an asset.

Conditions of Employment
  • A satisfactory Criminal Records Check with Vulnerable Sector Search. This would be the financial responsibility of the successful candidate.
  • Ability to pass and maintain Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) certification (training provided by CASA) or Supporting Individuals through Valued Attachments (SIVA) training, as well as physical ability to perform all interventions.
