Job Description – Heavy Equipment Operator – Various Projects
Summary:
MacKay Contracting Ltd. is a progressive and well established Heavy Civil Construction and Mining Services Company. We operate throughout Western Canada on a wide variety of projects. The Heavy Equipment Operator is a vital position for MacKay Contracting Ltd. to ensure the safe and accurate use of various construction equipment that contributes to the success of our mining projects.
Location & Hours:
This role is for our various projects throughout the East Kootenays, with shifts varying depending on the requirements of the project. A typical workday is 7:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. and again is subject to the needs of the project. There may be occasion(s) where overtime is required but is not expected to make up a major component of the role.
Responsibilities & Duties:
- Perform work in accordance with all organizational, as well as Provincial and Federal health and safety standards and legislation, ensuring highest standard of safety is upheld
- Work within a team to operate multiple pieces of equipment effectively and safely such as an excavator, loader, dozer, grader, and haul truck
- Loading and unloading equipment from vehicles used to transport it
- Driving or controlling heavy equipment to complete tasks at the construction site
- Ability to operate in crowded, fast-paced working environments, and exercise extreme caution with awareness of potential situational hazards to ensure site safety
- Interpret verbal and non-verbal communication (including hand signals) from operators, ground personnel and labourers, and act accordingly
- Perform mechanical inspections and servicing including controls and operations, completing logbooks, performing minor maintenance and adjustments, ensuring good housekeeping, and perform machine lubrication within your skillset
- Recognize existing and potential hazards and can identify these through conducting a field level pre-job hazard analysis, checking for hazards, and assessing any tasks
- Willing to work flexible hours and shifts
- Adhere to all MacKay safety practices and policies
- Operate equipment while maintaining proper awareness of surroundings
- Daily submission of daily timecards
- Daily completion/submission of FLHA reports
- Assist with general labourer duties if and when required
Qualifications & Skills:
- Minimum 3-5 years experience in Mining or Civil Construction
- Knowledge of construction layout/staking
- Knowledge of operating 3D machine control considered an asset
- Knowledge of safety protocols and the procedures used to control heavy equipment
- Coordination to use all the controls on pieces of equipment
- Possess enough strength to operate on heavy equipment
- Must possess a valid Class 5 B.C. Driver's Licence
- Must have demonstrated ability to work under minimal supervision
- Ability to operate required equipment in a safe and responsible manner
- Effective verbal and non-verbal communication and active listening skills essential
- Problem-solving skills to diagnose issues with equipment
- Basic writing skills to accurately complete reports and other paperwork
- Good non-commercial driver's licence history to indicate a habit of safe driving
- Position requires a high level of initiative and a positive attitude
- Ability to give and follow both oral and written instructions while operating safely
- Excellent interpersonal communication and influencing skills with internal and external stakeholders at all levels
