Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Assistant Chief (Logistics), this position is responsible for supporting the maintenance and repair of Fire Department apparatus, fleet vehicles and related equipment.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Repairs, overhauls, inspects, services, and maintains all types of Fire Department apparatus and related equipment including aerial trucks, passenger vehicles, boats, small engines, two stroke engines, pumps, nozzles and related appliances.
  • Inspects units, including conducting operational tests where necessary, and tests various systems and components to determine specific problems.
  • Tests repaired equipment for proper performance and to ensure that work meets the manufacturers specifications.
  • Adjusts, repairs, and replaces parts and components of primarily heavy equipment using hand tools and other specialized equipment.
  • Requisitions materials, supplies and equipment, as required.
  • Diagnoses and repairs a wide variety of electrical, pneumatic and hydraulic systems and associated components.
  • Overhauls various mechanical components, such as engines, transmissions, differentials, final drives, brakes, steering, suspensions and auxiliary equipment.
  • Performs metal fabrication and welding duties such as building hose racks, cabinets, trailer repair, etc.
  • Supports and promotes the health and safety of employees and the general public in accordance with the Saskatchewan Employment Act, Saskatchewan Health Regulations and Standards, Occupational Health & Safety Regulations and the City of Saskatoons administrative Occupational Health & Safety policies and departmental procedures. Maintains and monitors programs which affect public health and safety.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Grade 12 education.
  • Possession of a Provincial or Interprovincial Journeyperson Heavy Duty Mechanic Certificate or Journeyperson Heavy Equipment Mechanic Certificate.
  • Five years' current related Journeyperson experience with large equipment and heavy-duty truck repairs. Experience repairing fire apparatus and associated equipment (fire pumps, foam systems) is considered an asset.
  • Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) certification preferred.
  • Possession of a valid Saskatchewan Class 3A Driver's Licence.
  • Current drivers abstract from SGI demonstrating a safe driving record.
  • Successful completion of WHMIS training.
  • Ability to obtain a recognized aerial Fire Apparatus maintenance and inspection certificate.
  • Ability to successfully complete required continuing education courses. Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
  • Knowledge of electronic engines, electronic transmissions, diesel systems, air brake systems and associated components.
  • Knowledge of standard methods, materials, tools and equipment involved in fire apparatus maintenance.
  • Knowledge of the safe operation and maintenance of shop equipment and tools.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise good judgement in the care and handling of motor vehicles.
  • Demonstrated skills in basic welding.
  • Ability to recognize and report on potential hazards and take measures to remove them.
  • Ability to comprehend technical vehicle service manuals and repair bulletins.
  • Ability to complete and process all forms and reports.
  • Ability to deal courteously and tactfully with the public and fellow employees.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision, individually or as a team member.
  • Ability to plan and organize maintenance work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to adapt to changing technology and have skill in the operation of a computer.

Weekly Hours: 40

Salary Range: $54.72 to $56.87 CAD per hour (2023 rates)
