We are currently looking for ASL Interpreters for a variety of academic disciplines. Candidates will be expected to attend in person classes at university/colleges in Oshawa and surrounding regions. These service providers help students overcome barriers in class to succeed!
We have a preference for candidates with an understanding of technical terminology for Computer Science, and STEM classes , however, those a part of other educational disciplines are welcome to apply.
Responsibilities:
- Provide interpreting and transliteration services to deaf and hard-of-hearing students, faculty, and staff in academic and non-academic settings, including classrooms, meetings, events, and activities, as requested by the university or college.
- Follow ethical standards of the profession, maintain confidentiality, and adhere to the university or college's policies and procedures.
- Maintain accurate and timely records of interpreting services provided, including timesheets, invoices, and other necessary documentation.
- Attend required meetings and trainings, as specified by the university or college.
- Maintain professional development by staying current with new developments and advancements in the field of ASL interpretation.
Requirements
We are looking for individuals who have
- An active member of the Canadian Association of Sign Language Interpreters (CASLI)
- Minimum 2 year post-secondary diploma/degree from an accredited program.
- Ability to match the diverse language use of consumers.
- Experience with ASL Interpretation in an academic environment
- Sensitivity to the needs of people with disabilities.
- Ability to analyze and process information quickly
- Able to work independently- being on time, dependable and able to meet deadlines
We require a minimum commitment of one academic semester.
Assignments vary depending on the student's schedules. Assignments typically take place between 8am – 9pm Monday to Saturday.
