Who are we looking for:

The Human Resources Manager role is a newly created position to join the HR team and offers a fantastic opportunity for an experienced HR Professional with a track record of enabling aggressive growth through attracting, developing, and retaining a talented team of industry professionals. The ideal candidate will have hands on experience in the full range of human resources disciplines with thorough understanding of HR policies and procedures. The role will involve providing regional support for the company's operations in Western Canada, including recruitment, employee onboarding, conflict resolution, maintaining employee records and ensuring compliance with local regulations. As the company continues to grow, the Human Resources Manager will also provide support to Human Resources Director with strategies and processes, at national level, to build a solid foundation for future growth.

We are eager to find a Human Resources Manager who connects easily with people, is a team player, can operate independently, is logical, has excellent communication skills, has worked in the construction or industrial services sectors and has experience working in a unionized environment. The Human Resources Manager should be able to thrive in a fast-paced environment and has a detail-oriented mindset for handling the dynamic nature of full-life cycle of the workforce.

This position will support the Western Region of the HR Department (British Columbia and Alberta) and is ideal for those eager to embrace new challenges in a dynamic setting, where you can help to significantly impact and contribute to the national growth story in the years ahead.

What will you be doing:

  • Support branch managers and supervisors with talent acquisition process (sales/estimators, scaffolders, drivers, yard staff, etc.), workforce planning, employee engagement and to improve and monitor the performance pursuant to the performance management program.
  • Guide and support development of the team culture and foster employee diversity and inclusion at branch level.
  • Engage in field visits with field team to provide another forum for employee communication and feedback.
  • Provide effective administration in all areas of HR including employee retention, salary and performance review, training/coaching and development, benefits, policy development and legislation awareness.
  • Responsible for investigating and resolving issues such as employee complaints/grievances, labour and employee relations issues and non-work-related illnesses.
  • Collaborate with health and safety to promote safety at work and support safety initiatives.
  • Maintain management guidelines by preparing, updating and recommending HR policies and processes.
  • Ensuring all employment practices follow employment regulations at the federal and provincial level.
  • Complete onboarding and provide orientation support to managers, ensuring new employees are set for success.
  • Support and work closely with the Director, in completing employee surveys, developing and delivering strategic HR plans that fit with the overall business direction. This includes key strategic initiatives including further developing the company's progress development, performance management, training programs, and HR management systems.
  • Work closely with payroll coordinator and finance department to ensure all wages are accurate and employees are paid on time.
  • Addresses employee queries.
  • Administer and execute routine tasks in relation to employees from new hire/ dispatch to termination.
  • Manage offboarding processes and procedures.
  • Responsible for data integrity, security, and administration of HR systems.
  • Handle confidential matters with discretion.
  • Manage employee swag and organize employee social events.
  • Any other HR related duties, as assigned.

What experience and skills are we looking for:

  • Minimum 5 years' progressive Human Resources experience, in a construction or industrial environment.
  • College or University education in Human Resources.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, attention to detail and presentation skills, including excellent oral and written communication skills. This includes the ability to communicate, empathize, and relate to a wide variety of backgrounds and roles (e.g., sales/estimating, scaffolders/field workers, drivers, yard/warehouse workers, local and remote office staff).
  • Working knowledge of human resource information software (HRIS), experience with BambooHR would be an asset.
  • Ability to work independently and co-operatively as member of the HR team.
  • Must exhibit high level of professionalism, confidentiality, and a sense of discretion at all times.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle sensitive and contentious issues with tact and respect.
  • Adept to problem solving and conflict resolution.
  • Strong accuracy and data analysis.
  • Familiar with all related legislation including but not limited to BC E.S.A., Labour Relations Act, and Occupational Health and Safety Act
  • Competent using Microsoft office, spreadsheets, databases, reports and able to produce meaningful management information.
  • Ability to manage daily workload, set priorities and meet required deadlines.
  • Previous experience in construction and industrial services
  • Previous experience in a unionized environment is considered an asset.
  • Ability to travel to other Northstar Access' branches in Western Region (B.C. and Alberta).
