POSITION SUMMARY:

The HSE Advisor Position provides support in managing and maintaining the Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) systems, maintaining the training program, developing and updating safety policies and procedures, evaluating and managing project site safety, coordinating and leading audits and inspections, tracking corrective actions and incident data, reviewing important safety documents, and other duties as required. A successful HSE Advisor is organized, flexible, attentive, and shows exceptional attention to detail.

The HSE Advisor reports directly to the HSE Manager and will be required to take direction and seek input from several managers, project managers, and other Milestone staff members.

Act as a leader in HSE and be seen as the point person for assigned HSE programs and initiatives. Use safety management tools to monitor working hours, incidents, near misses and other key performance indicators for reporting. Report and escalate to management as needed. Create and maintain comprehensive project documentation, plans, and statistical reports.

Demonstrate a sense of urgency and strong commitment to achieving goals and objectives. Focus on details, organizational skills, and be able to work effectively with shifting priorities in rapidly changing environments. Effectively examine events, issues, and problems to generate optimal solutions in a timely manner and contribute to a positive health and safety culture throughout the organization.

Communicate with impact and create an environment in which people communicate openly and honestly. Foster teamwork, collaboration, and cooperation with a strong ability to work with a highly functional team.

Have in-depth knowledge of provincial health and safety legislation, guidelines, and best practices, and a demonstrated passion and commitment to being a safety leader and holding others accountable to the highest level of safety standards.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Health and Safety

Reads, understands, and follows Milestone's Corporate Health, Safety, and Environment Program, Policies and Procedures. Ensures health and safety is considered in the performance of all activities both on and off the job. Participation in HSE initiatives will be monitored and reviewed, as necessary.

Duties and Expectations

  • Regularly evaluate jobsites, equipment, and practices to ensure compliance with HSE legislation and Milestone HSE program requirements
  • Lead the ongoing development of the safety training program. Creating, updating, and organizing certifications/records
  • Assist Project Managers in development of project HSE plans.
  • Lead HSE Pre-Qualification Questionnaires
  • Lead the Subcontractor Management program
  • Provide HSE program guidance and support in consultation with Regional Managers and General Superintendents.
  • Conduct incident investigations, determine root causes, and implement corrective actions with the support of project leadership and share the learnings amongst regional staff.
  • Tabulate safety data, compile statistics, and conduct trend analysis
  • Review and maintain the emergency response plans and procedures
  • Develop materials and conduct new employee health and safety orientations
  • Address HSE related concerns to ensure compliance with applicable legislation
  • Manage PPE inspection and maintenance program
  • Identify and implement control measures for working with hazardous or potentially hazardous materials
  • Safety systems and forms management /administration
  • Demonstrate Milestone's core values and a positive and caring safety culture.
  • Demonstrate leadership and commitment to the HSE program and processes.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education Requirements:

  • HSE Certification or CRSP designation is required or must be close to completion
  • COR Internal Auditor certification required
  • NHSA certification is an asset
  • ISO 9000 certificate is an asset

Experience Required:

  • Minimum 5 years' experience in similar industry
  • Construction industry exposure/experience

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent communication skills; verbal, written, and presentation skills
  • Excellent computer skills; Office 365, Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

Experience with Health & Safety software, Salus, SiteDocs, Workhub, ISN, Avetta

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is usually in an office environment and regular field site visits are required. A reliable vehicle, clean drivers abstract, and the ability to get security clearance is a must.
