About us:
We are experts in water electrolysis. Founded in 2008, we believe strongly in the greening of industrial processes, transportation systems, and energy systems. From the start, our proven and experienced technology development team targeted the high cost of hydrogen generation from electricity sources, including renewable energy at scale. Our team has a combined 60+ years in water electrolysis and has dedicated the last 12 years to revolutionizing the design architecture of the electrolyser and has been awarded 39 patents (with more pending) across multiple jurisdictions.

Role Overview:
Reporting to the Systems Engineering Manager, the Mechanical Engineering Specialist will contribute to the design of electrolyzer systems while also acting as the engineering representative responsible for test infrastructure at Next Hydrogen's facility. This position engages in various aspects of system design and supports procurement, manufacturing, testing, and operational activities for ongoing projects and facility operations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with engineers and designers from various disciplines (process, mechanical, electrical, instrumentation & controls) to develop system designs.
  • Create and review Block Flow Diagrams (BFDs), Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs), and Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs).
  • Perform system calculations, including equipment sizing and optimization, and assist with mechanical and process equipment evaluation.
  • Ensure system designs comply with industry codes and standards (e.g., ASME, CSA, API, NFPA, ANSI, ASTM, ISO, IEC).
  • Prepare equipment lists, bill of materials (BOMs), and specifications; support procurement and manufacturing activities.
  • Review and provide feedback on process and mechanical designs and drawings, preparing markups where necessary.
  • Develop and maintain assembly and work instructions, installation, commissioning, and maintenance procedures for test infrastructure.
  • Support cross-functional design and safety reviews, including pre-start safety reviews (PSRs).
  • Maintain documentation for NHC test infrastructure, overseeing the management of change (MOC) processes.
  • Assist with planning and execution of tests and studies, collecting and analyzing data, and preparing technical reports.
  • Interface with departments such as Product Development, Project Engineering, Supply Chain, Quality, and Operations to ensure project success.
  • Support testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting both in-factory and on-site.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Ontario P.Eng. license, EIT, or qualifications suitable for near-term certification.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in the design and hands-on work with process and mechanical systems.
  • Strong knowledge of equipment such as pumps, heat exchangers, compressors, and control valves, along with experience in CAD software (AutoCAD, SolidWorks preferred).
  • Familiarity with industry codes and standards (e.g., ASME BPVC, API, CSA).
  • Experience with high-pressure gas systems is beneficial; exposure to electrolysis, fuel cells, or hydrogen systems is a plus.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills with proficiency in MS Office applications..

Working Conditions:

  • Primarily office-based with periodic work in an adjacent manufacturing and testing facility.
  • Majority of working time is spent at a desk, with occasional movement around the facility to interact with equipment and systems.
  • Light to moderate travel within the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) for site visits and field support.
  • Occasional on-site support may be required.
  • Personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety shoes, safety glasses, high- visibility vests, and hard hats, is required in designated areas of the facility.
