Location: Oshawa, Ontario, Canada (Onsite)

Shift: Monday – Friday and two weekends a month. Starting on day shifts and then will move to rotating shifts. Need be flexible for 3 shifts operation.

• 3 weeks on day shift (6:30AM – 2:30PM)

• 1 week on afternoons (2:30PM -10:30PM)

• 1 week on nights (10:30PM – 6:30AM)

Role Summary

The main function of a plant manufacturing controls engineer is to support ongoing production initiatives through bottleneck analysis, root cause of equipment downtime, and implementation of continuous improvement initiatives and projects. Continuous improvement initiatives will typically focus on driving equipment up time, process efficiency and error proofing of assembly processes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop a proactive safety culture by engaging team members and peers in safety processes.
  • Understand and effective use of Global Manufacturing System. 
  • Provide daily support of production operations with focus on personnel and equipment safety, process quality and uptime with a focus on automation and controls.
  • Provide technical/engineering support to assist production and maintenance with troubleshooting equipment/process failures and with identifying effective follow-up countermeasures. 
  • Identify and execute projects to support achievement of departmental business objectives and continuous improvement of safety, quality, cost and reliability.
  • Review equipment operation and reliability (develop tracking methods where applicable).
  • Identify and execute special projects for process and quality improvements, equipment refurbishment, line rate increases and future programs.
  • Ensure new and existing equipment meets operational requirements and appropriate standards.
  • Ensure proper documentation (drawings, manuals, PM schedules etc.) is available and properly maintained for all equipment in assigned area, ensure spare parts availability and develop maintenance standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Maintain current knowledge in fields of expertise.
  • Update management on current status and emerging trends of areas of expertise as relating to equipment standards, legislative requirements, company requirements, etc. 
  • Identify technical training and knowledge transfer opportunities with other Controls Engineers, Interns, and Maintenance Associates. 
  • Design and manage key strategic interfaces within systems to enable component reuse and consistency to standard methodologies.
  • Provide support to other specialists for root cause analysis.
  • Design Tests to efficiently find opportunities for design improvements.
  • Identify and document system vulnerabilities and craft mitigation action plans; track corrective actions.

Requirements

Required Skills and Experiences:

  • 2 - 4 years of controls and automation experience with Automotive background.
  • Proficient with application of programmable machine controls hardware and software.
  • Proficient with PLC programming and troubleshooting.
  • Proficient with developing and configuring HMI software.
  • Knowledge of conveyors, welding and robots (Fanuc specifically).
  • Familiarity with basic electrical standards.
  • Familiarity with basic safety standards.
  • Capable of supervision.
  • Proficient troubleshooting and debugging skills, finding resolution, implementing those resolutions to ensure equipment is running properly and safely.
  • Creative, disciplined, strong sense of responsibility to deliver results and meet schedule and commitment.
  • Effective communication skills and a strong problem solver.

Preferred Skills and Experiences:

  • Certified in GM Controls Standards through completion of GCCS2/GCCH1 training.

Education and Training:

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant technical field. Open to college diploma.
