Project Overview
The Database Administration team is in the process of working on several large projects intended to optimize database operations. These projects are long-running and could potentially impact most applications across the company. The effort needed, per application, can be quite large and can impact operational duties of the team. By acquiring contingent labor the team will be able to provide more effort in these initiatives and avoid costs faster or even reduce licensing costs overall. This resource will provide the labor while the staff members will provide the strategy and tactical thinking necessary to succeed.
These projects include:
- Reviewing and consolidating SQL Server licensing costs or reducing licensing costs in the long term.
- Implementing Database monitoring for the vast majority of the company database environment.
- Creating new reporting andor reporting options to highlight and elevate critical database issues to management.
Duties:
This role is responsible for building, maintaining, and performance tuning production databases to deliver databases with appropriate levels of data availability and performance. This role is also responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing database procedures and standards.
• Provide technical expertise in database management systems to support systems development and operational activities.
• Create and maintain the logical and physical structures of databases and related structures required by database applications.
• Monitor database applications, databases and DBMS statistics and recommend the appropriate changes to improve performance.
• Maintain database authorization requirements.
• Maintain and enforce database security standards and procedures.
• Evaluate application and user requirements and recommend appropriate database modifications.
• Provide technical expertise to development teams, Application Maintenance Services and business teams if engaged.
• Perform troubleshooting activities for database problems, database software problems and database application problems.
• Perform DBMS software installations, plan and test upgrades.
• Plan, test and implement software patches and application updates or upgrades.
• Disaster recovery preparation and testing.
• Develop and maintain technical documentation.
• Develop and automate system related procedures.
• Perform problem diagnosis, troubleshooting and resolution.
• Monitor on-going operations and perform on-going system administration tasks: release new versions; database tuning; capacity planning; historical archiving; database consistency and integrity checking; log file analysis; job scheduling; scripting; indexes; reorganizations; change control; and server requirements analysis.
Equipment requirements:
• Resource will require own equipment
Resource must provide their own computer and related equipment. The computer's operating system must be a modern version of Windows or MacOS that is compatible with Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) and related software for remote access. Windows is preferred due to better compatibility. AVD/remote-related software will be installed on the resource's computer.
Working Hours:
• Standard Hours of work are 08:15 – 16:30 Alberta time, Monday through Friday excluding holidays observed by the Province
• Work must be done from within Canada, due to network and data security issues.
• It is anticipated the role will be 100% remote, however in the event of an onsite meeting, the company does not pay for travel to attend on-site meetings, nor any expenses related to relocation, commuting, housing/accommodation, food/drink.
