Position Overview
At Garibaldi, we prioritize a safe and healthy work environment for our employees and visitors. The Health and Safety Coordinator is our safety champion, promoting a strong health and safety culture. Responsibilities include managing health and safety activities, document control, safety training, claims management, facilitating and participating as the chair of the JOSH and Operations Safety management committee meetings. This role reports directly to the VP of Operations.
Key Responsibilities
Health and Safety Culture
  • Continuously enhance the company's safety culture through effective communication, new practices, and innovation.
  • Collaborate with internal subject matter experts to carry out hazard analyses and develop operational safety best practices.
  • Consult with, coach, and train managers on various safety issues such as compliance, hazard and risk assessments, and development of procedures and controls.
  • Safety communication champion to create an engaging and positive safety outlook.
  • Acts as a change agent in support of continuous improvement in the safety department.
Health and Safety Program Management
  • Maintain OHS Program and ensure it is updated with new information and changes in regulations.
  • Compile and present monthly safety metrics according to established company KPIs.
  • Communicate to management how safety initiatives are being received and how effective they are.
  • Develop and manage a root cause analysis program within the Corrective Action Program for safety incidents and near misses. This includes assessing incidents, capturing and communicating learnings, and ensuring proper follow-up on action plans with management.
  • Respond to and/or advise managers, supervisors, and team members in work refusal, emergency, or serious injury situations involving exposures or serious accidents.
  • Collaborate with Production Leadership and staff to adhere to and improve the health and safety program and policies.
  • Meet bi-weekly with the Engineering Team and Maintenance Team Leader to review their 30-60-90-day plans and assist in creating action plans to identify and address all safety items.
  • Meet bi-weekly with Plant leadership to share ongoing or trending data, understand their issues, and assist in addressing them.
  • Co-chair monthly JOSH committee meetings and safety management meetings, maintaining all necessary records and documentation associated with committees.
  • Investigate concerns and suggestions brought forward by team members, or managers, and liaise with management and/or HR on issues as required.
  • Provide, conduct, and train others on performing risk assessments as needed.
  • Review and interpret OHS legislation, regulations, and industry best practices.
  • Coordinate JOSH committee member training, team member training, hearing tests, fire alarm testing; Coordinate and deliver safety training courses and testing or arrange for external training.
  • Working with the Purchasing department, ensure that our inventory of chemical products and substances complies with current WHMIS regulations.
  • Organize an action plan after audits/inspections conducted by various external bodies, including the company's customers, WorkSafe BC, Fire Dept., etc.
  • Managing first aid program including management of files of first aid treatments, administering database, and maintaining first aid supplies and inventory.
  • Evaluate and monitor health and safety hazards and recommend strategies to control risks in the workplace.
Health and Safety Compliance
  • Ensure that the company is always compliant with all relevant regulations and legislation.
  • Enforcement of the company's OHS Program, and all other safety related policies, procedures, and instructions, across all job functions and duties, including team members, managers, contractors, and visitors.
  • Take the lead in all COR audits to ensure compliance and successful outcome.
  • Follow up on action plans for internal departments, such as Maintenance, Operations, Production, etc.
  • Comply with Company Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) policies for all areas and be responsible for safekeeping of all PPE provided by the company.

Qualifications (Education, Experience, Training)
  • Certificate or Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety, or equivalent related education
  • 5+ years' experience in a safety-related position within the manufacturing industry
  • CRSP designation or in process of achieving or willingness to achieve the designation.

Required Knowledge, Skill and Abilities
  • Solid understanding and knowledge of OHS regulations in BC and Canada, including WorkSafe BC Regulations and the Worker's Compensation Act.
  • A passion for safety and creating a safe work environment.
  • Proven project management and change management skills.
  • Experience providing training and development across the organization with demonstrated ability to facilitate meetings effectively.
  • The ability to work in a dynamic and high pressure, multi-shift work environment.
  • Strong organization skills
  • A solid understanding of accident causation and prevention
  • Competency at carrying out audits is an asset.
  • Excellent written and oral English communication skills to effectively communicate with individuals at all levels of the organization and external service providers.

Working Conditions
This position works half the time in an office environment and the other within our manufacturing facility.
Standard Office:
  • Comfortable indoor area.
  • Comfortable environment with exposure to some dust, dirt or other conditions which might produce mild discomfort.
  • Frequent, short periods when it is necessary to pay close attention to the monitoring of sight and sounds.
  • Moderate mental demands due to one or more conditions which are present in the job. There may be noticeable pressure from simultaneous priorities and deadlines.

Manufacturing Plant:
  • Temperature controlled indoor area.
  • Comfortable environment with exposure to some dust, dirt or other conditions which might produce mild discomfort.
  • Safety sensitive environment with mobile equipment and overhead cranes
  • Physically demanding job requiring one to stand for extended periods of time.
  • Most departments have a requirement to lift up to 50lbs. throughout shift.

Quantitative Dimensions
  • This role does not have direct reports; however, runs the Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee and Safety Management Committee
  • This role works with all levels of the organization.
Compensation
Ranges depending on experience.
