Position: Bioinformatician

Location: MaRS Centre, Toronto

Reports To: Co-Director, Diagnostic Development and Principal Research Scientist

Salary: Commensurate with level of experience; total compensation includes a competitive benefits plan, plus a defined benefit pension plan (HOOPP)

Hours: 35 hours/week

Position Summary

The Ontario Institute for Cancer Research (OICR) is seeking a Bioinformatician who possess relevant training to join the Window of Opportunity (WOO) Network. The WOO Network is a province-wide community of clinicians, cancer researchers and patient partners focused on conducting pre-surgical clinical trials in treatment-naive patients. Our team includes internationally recognized experts in biomarker discovery and validation, and actively works with diagnostics industry and biotech companies. To better understand the biological effects of novel cancer therapies, we conduct genomic analyses including next-generation genomic and transcriptome sequencing and spatial proteomic data. Working under the direction of senior staff, you will have the opportunity to work with the datasets from clinical trials and to address problems that have direct impact on clinical needs and patient care.

This position is temporary, full-time until March 31, 2026, with the possibility of an extension.

Position Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the design, development, and implementation of biomarker bioinformatics pipelines and related databases.
  • Perform advanced bioinformatic analysis on diverse data sets, including, whole genome and transcriptome sequencing data, spatial biology data.
  • Automate data processing and generate diverse reports.
  • Integrate diverse datasets in multiple platforms and conduct unified meta analyses.
  • Perform downstream data analysis, including visualization, pathway, drug response analyses and clinical association studies.

Qualifications

  • M.Sc. in biological sciences, computer sciences, computational biology, engineering, or mathematics, or recognized equivalent.
  • Knowledge of genomics, molecular and/or cancer biology.
  • Experience working in a Unix/Linux environment.
  • Experience processing next-generation sequencing data, from raw reads to final output.
  • Exposure to dataset management, including generation, backup and control.
  • Knowledge of scripting languages (e.g., Perl), statistical analysis tools (e.g., R) and database programming (e.g., SQL) is required.
  • Knowledge of molecular and/or cancer biology.
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
  • All candidates must be able to function proficiently in English.
