Summary

The Livestock Specialist works collaboratively as part of Donor Care and the Semen & Embryo Lab teams to ensure animals are cared for and processed effectively and efficiently with the highest regard for animal welfare.

Job Duties:

Animal Husbandry:

  • Clean and bed pens to keep animals as comfortable as possible
  • Feed animals manually as well as using machinery
  • Monitor feed intake and adjust when needed to meet the needs of our animal nutrition program
  • Observe animals for health issues and report back to the manager with concerns
  • Provide above-standard animal care including, and not limited to, clipping, washing, and feet trimming.

Reproduction:

  • Monitor animal health daily and treat according to protocols or in consultation with veterinarians on site
  • Donor and recipient treatments for superovulation/synchronization
  • Heat detection on donors and recipient females (experience considered an asset).

Administration/Inventory:

  • Client contact regarding animals on hand, arrivals/departures, mating, semen/embryo shipping
  • Receive and discharge the animals and complete paperwork
  • Maintain semen and embryo inventory and shipping/receiving
  • Maintain log records for nitrogen tanks and check and top up regularly to ensure the contents of tanks remain in the right environment.

General Duties:

  • Animal husbandry. Feeding, bedding, health, and heat monitoring
  • Maintain the facility in a professional manner and display the cattle in a professional manner that is consistent with a “Best in Class” approach. BVG aims to be the facility of choice for people and must provide them with Best-in-Class service and care
  • Assist on our Embryo transfer side as well as Semen collection on bulls.
  • Maintain equipment regularly.

Required Skills:

  • Artificial Insemination skills and experience is considered an asset but not necessary
  • Cattle handling
  • Skid steer operating experience.

Hours of Work:

  • General business hours are 8:00 am – 4:00 pm, with longer days in the busy season
  • Rotational weekends are required for feeding, bedding, and administering reproductive drugs to certain animals
  • Not required to be onsite full-time on weekends during the off-season, but required to be reachable and available to meet clients on short notice during business hours
  • Occasional after-hours availability for client drop off and pick up to accommodate clients (this is not promoted but within reason, clients will be accommodated).
