Introduction & Key Role Objectives

WJ Groundwater is the leading construction dewatering and groundwater specialist in the UK, with operations in Canada, the Middle East, Poland, the Philippines, and South Korea. We have specialized plants and equipment that allow us to install custom dewatering and water treatment systems in various environments, including from within tunnels and shafts and from the surface.

The principal function of the Construction Labourer position is to carry out the installation and maintenance of dewatering systems. This job is for dewatering works associated with a major construction project in Surrey, BC. Work is to take place at surface and in excavations/shafts. WJ Groundwater offers an extensive training and development program. Company Induction, on the job training & PPE issue will be provided from commencement of your employment.

Key Areas of Responsibility

  1. Setting up Dewatering Systems:
    • Unload, distribute and lay out ready for use, equipment such as pumps, cables, pipes etc.
    • Carry out the development of wells using compressors and hoses.
    • Install pipes and pumps (this will involve the manual handling of items over 25kg).
    • Laying and connection of temporary pipework and cables.
    • Installation of groundwater instruments.
    • Working with our clients on the installation of dewatering wells within tunnels, adits and shafts, often in confined spaces.
    • Maintain a clean and tidy work site.
    • Preparing a daily written report of your activities.
  2. Maintaining Dewatering Systems:
    • Carry out routine inspection and follow maintenance schedules of dewatering installation on different sites or locations.
    • Carry out monitoring and report water levels and pump operation.
    • Liaise with our clients supervisors/managers on corrective actions required.
  3. Assistance with drilling operation:
    • Loading of drilling rod (this involves manual handling of items over 25kg).
    • Laying out pipework.
    • Setting up of mud recirculation and water flushing systems.
    • Operation of grout mixer and pump.
    • Assistance with installing aggregate into well annulus (this could involve shoveling by hand 100+kg of gravel).
    • Clearing up the following drilling activity (e.g. collect waste materials, shovel left over spoil, sweep up, clean down plant).

Qualifications and Experience

Minimum 3 years' experience within the heavy civil construction industry or similar a field, or 12 months acting as a Trainee Dewatering Operative.

  • Minimum 1 year of plumbing and piping experience.
  • Experience working with pumping systems and/or water treatment will be considered an asset.
  • Drilling or driller's assistant experience will be considered an asset.

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements

Working with WJ colleagues and our clients for the installation of dewatering systems in both outdoor & indoor environments (often within tunnels, adits and shafts, which are frequently classified as low to medium risk confined spaces).

You may be asked to work overtime at evenings and weekends depending on client requirements and the nature of the work being carried out. Although this is not regular it can often be at short notice by our clients.

The job role is physically demanding where you will be standing for extended periods of time often in outdoor environments in all weather conditions. You will lift heavy objects on a regular basis and quite often do repetitive tasks
