Position Overview
Reporting directly to the Director of Care, the Infection Control Nurse is responsible for Implementing an effective Infection Control Program for the facility by applying Continuous Quality Improvement methodology and epidemiologic principles.
Key Tasks and Responsibilities:
  • Develops and reviews relevant policies and procedures based on IPAC best practices and evidenced-based research.
  • Maintains liaison with the local Public Health Unit and other Infection Control colleagues.
  • Investigates the causes of nosocomial infections, and institutes measures to remedy potentially dangerous situations. Identifies risk management issues and recommends improvements.
  • Assumes leadership role in Outbreak situations by ensuring appropriate protocols are implemented, information is provided, records are maintained and information is reported according to policy.
  • Leads immunization programs for residents and staff.
  • Conducts a continuous program of surveillance, observation of procedures and techniques throughout the facility, reviews laboratory reports which may indicate the presence of infection, and maintains accurate infection control records.
  • Chairs the Infection Control Committee and completes an annual program review.
  • Ensures that IPAC guidelines are followed during construction, renovation and maintenance in the home.
  • Perform additional related duties as required.
Skills and Knowledge:
  • Registered Nurse in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • Possesses or is working toward Certification in Infection Control (CIC).
  • Experience working as an Infection Control Nurse.
  • Experience working in Long Term Care desirable.
  • Knowledge of continuous improvement principles.
  • Minimum of three years clinical, project leadership or management experience.
  • Experience using PointClickCare an asset.
  • Skill in planning, coordinating and supervising the work of other nursing personnel
  • Demonstrated success leading new initiatives
  • Well-developed oral and written communication skills
  • Knowledge and experience with adult education strategies
  • Well organized, with excellent time management skills and proven ability to accomplish tasks
  • Clear aptitude for detail-oriented work
  • Training in the Gentle Persuasive Approach and U-First is considered an asset.
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification.
Soft Skills:
  • The ability to act as a role model with staff, residents, and members of the public. This includes interacting tactfully and courteously with residents, families and visitors, and encouraging effective teamwork as a positive role model for other staff and students.
  • Provide effective support and supervision for the RPN, non-registered staff, support staff and students.
  • Effectively maintain positive relationships with other multidisciplinary team members, families and the public.
  • Demonstrate effective, professional oral and written communication.
  • The ability to manage emergency situations effectively and efficiently.
  • The maturity to assume accountability for one's own actions.
Working Conditions:
All while showing compassion and care to the Manor's residents:
  • Stand and walk for long periods
  • Sit for short periods
  • Bend, stoop, and carry
  • Push/pull wheeled equipment
  • Safely transfer and lift (up to 20 kg.) in accordance with Sherwood Park Manor's transfer and lift procedures
  • Work day, evening, night shifts; weekends, holidays and for call-in shifts.
  • Must have an up to date 2 –step TB test.
Signing Bonus:
A signing bonus of $2500 will be offered to successful candidates, with a two (2) year commitment to the position.
