Key Responsibilities

  • Command and operate ships or vessels to transport passengers and cargo.
  • Supervise and coordinate activities of deck crews.
  • Command and operate coast guard vessels.
  • Ensure safety and comfort of passengers.
  • Determine geographical position using navigational instruments, maps, and charts.
  • Direct and oversee the loading and unloading of cargo.
  • Control, steer, and navigate a vessel in various waterways.
  • Enforce regulations in Canadian waters.
  • Record vessel's progress, weather, and sea conditions in the ship's log.
  • Board vessels at berth or from pilot boats to advise ships' captains on safe passage.
