WHAT'S THE JOB?'
Reporting to the Vice President, Finance, the Director of Tax will be responsible for planning, directing, and executing the activities of the Tax function which plays a critical role in the sustainability of the organization and the execution of enterprise strategy. This role involves maintaining ownership of tax reporting and compliance, managing relationships with regulators, leadership and development of employees, as well as implementing strategies to optimize use of company resources while minimizing risk. The Director of Tax plays a crucial role in enterprise risk management, assessing financial risks, and advising senior management on financial strategies. Their expertise is essential in maintaining the financial health and stability of the organization
The Director, Tax has oversight over the following:
Strategic Leadership and Direction
- Lead the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of the tax department.
- Develop and implement strategies to minimize tax liabilities while ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Provide strategic tax planning advice to senior management on mergers, acquisitions, expansions, and other corporate initiatives or tax planning.
- Identify tax-related risks and opportunities; develop strategies to mitigate risks while optimizing tax benefits.
Compliance and Regulatory Oversight
- Ensure compliance with all federal, provincial, and local tax laws and regulations.
- Oversee the accurate and timely submission of all tax filings, including income tax, sales tax, and other relevant obligations.
- Maintain effective control procedures across all tax processes to ensure regulatory adherence.
- Ensure that all tax-related transactions are documented and compliant with relevant regulations.
Tax Planning and Reporting
- Prepare and review tax filings, tax provisions, and other required documents.
- Coordinate timely and accurate tax payments, supporting external financial reporting.
- Stay updated on tax law changes, analyzing and communicating their impacts on company operations and planning.
- Oversee the drafting and execution of tax-related matters in company contracts.
Process Optimization and Policy Development
- Prepare and maintain comprehensive company policies and procedure documents related to tax matters.
- Identify and implement opportunities for improving tax procedures and overall efficiency within the department.
Stakeholder Engagement and Communication
- Serve as the primary point of contact for tax-related inquiries from internal departments and external stakeholders.
- Build and maintain relationships with external auditors, tax consultants, and subject matter experts to leverage specialized knowledge.
- Communicate complex tax concepts effectively to non-experts, ensuring clarity and comprehension across functions.
Team Development and Management
- Manage and guide direct reports (3) to achieve departmental objectives and maintain high-performance standards.
- Provide employees with development opportunities and resources to support their professional growth within the tax function.
Audit Management
- Lead and manage tax audits by government agencies.
- Implement corrective actions and recommendations from audit findings to reinforce compliance and efficiency.
Qualifications
WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR?
- Completion of University Degree in Business, Accounting or Finance
- CPA or similar professional designation
- Strong knowledge / experience in tax responsibilities, especially related to direct and indirect compliance and reporting, audit management, research and communication skills and tax optimization efforts
- Over 10 years of related experience
- Over 5 years of supervisory/managerial experience
- Experience with corporate tax in a publicly traded company;
- Experience with building and preparing complex tax provisions;
- Experience with Wolters Kluwer tax software;
- Working knowledge of U.S. tax and cross-border tax rules;
- Completion of CICA In-Depth tax course is required; and
- NetSuite or OneStream experience would be considered an asset.

Working Arrangement: Office environment with a flexible work schedule, potentially requiring work on evenings and weekends. Trained, as necessary, in required safety protocols.
