JOB DESCRIPTION
As a member of the Hull Engineering team, the Weight Control Engineer will provide technical oversight and support throughout the design, construction, testing/commissioning, and delivery of multiple classes of Royal Canadian Navy and Canadian Coast Guard vessels. The Weight Control Engineer will work independently with general supervision from the Naval Architecture & Structures Team Lead.
RESPONSIBILITIES

• Develop weight monitoring and control plans across all shipyard and vendor facilities;
• Manage weight monitoring and control activities performed by design agent subcontractors, production trades, quality control, and equipment vendors;
• Review the periodic delivery of detailed weight reports, Vendor Furnished Information (VFI), and Government Furnished Information (GFI) to track the consumption of customer acquisition, design, and build margins;
• Oversee equipment and material check weighing at supplier facilities and at receipt inspections;
• Develop quarterly margins presentations and brief Engineering Management on margin consumption trends through the design and construction phases;
• Develop interim product weight estimates from 3D model and weight database to support lifting arrangements and check weight monitoring;
• Develop plans and support new construction deadweight surveys and inclining experiments to support the major new design and construction projects that are underway the Weight Control Engineer will be expected to work in both an office and shipbuilding industrial environment to actively monitor weight margin consumption throughout design and build;
• Author processes & procedures documenting how recurring engineering support and deliverables in their assigned discipline are created;
• Develop mitigation plans for risks associated with their engineering discipline and make risk-based technical decisions;
• Identify opportunities for Continuous Improvement within their engineering discipline.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor of Engineering (B. Eng.) or equivalent, Professional Engineer (P. Eng.);
• Knowledge and genuine interest of naval / modern ship design and construction methods; standards/regulations applicable to role (Lloyds Register, Transport Canada, IMO, IACS);
• Understanding of scheduling, ability to adhere to strict deadlines, manage & develop schedules;
• Working knowledge of shipyard disciplines applicable to ship construction (hull structure, ship arrangements, and outfitting approaches);
• Some exposure to or interest in marine field through work experience (e.g. co-op) or academic study;
• Demonstrated experience (typically 4-10 years) in ship design or construction or relevant complex industrial and manufacturing environment;
• Demonstrated ability to read blueprints, navigate within a 3D model and/or simulation of the ship, develop & markup drawings, develop presentations and reports, develop technical specifications, perform technical investigations, and develop statement of work for subcontractors;
• Database development and management required. ShipWeight database experience preferred.
