Job Summary:
The Radiation Medicine Program (RMP) at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre is dedicated to providing exceptional patient care and advancing innovative research in radiation oncology. As a comprehensive program, RMP is focused on improving patient outcomes through state-of-the-art technology, clinical trials, and interdisciplinary collaboration. The team works closely with clinical, research, and educational partners to improve radiation therapies and contribute to cutting-edge advancements in cancer treatment.
One of our current initiatives involves leveraging large language models, such as ChatGPT-4o, to support the screening and synthesis of clinical trial data for oncology. After successfully piloting an AI-assisted systematic review model for identifying radiotherapy-focused pancreatic cancer trials, we are expanding this methodology to other cancer types and building tools to automate the extraction and summarization of clinical trial outcomes.
The summer research student will contribute to cutting-edge cancer research by applying and enhancing AI-driven tools, including large language models like ChatGPT-4o, to streamline clinical trial analysis and support the advancement of radiation oncology treatments.
We ask that applicants attach a cover letter with their application.
Key Responsibilities:
- Apply and optimize a validated ChatGPT-4o-assisted systematic review screening methodology to a new cancer type, under supervision.
- Use Excel and Covidence outputs to support AI-prompt tuning and validation.
- Assist in the development of a ChatGPT/LLM-based pipeline for abstract-level extraction of trial outcomes (e.g., survival, toxicity, response rates).
- Contribute to the creation of summary dashboards and comparison tables from extracted data to facilitate decision-making and knowledge translation.
- Conduct supporting literature reviews related to radiotherapy, systematic review methodologies, and LLM-based research tools.
- Assist with manuscript preparation, documentation of methods, and possible conference submissions.
- Participate in weekly research meetings and collaborate with clinical and technical team members.
- Currently enrolled in an undergraduate Health Sciences, Life Sciences, Computer Science, or related program.
- Strong interest in AI applications in medicine, radiation oncology, health informatics, or evidence synthesis.
- Proficiency with Python, Excel, and literature review platforms (e.g., Covidence, EndNote).
- Familiarity with data science methods, prompt engineering, or natural language processing is an asset.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with attention to detail.
- Experience in conducting independent research and literature review.
- Ability to work proactively, independently, and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
