Job Summary:
The Head and Neck (HN) team within Radiation Medicine Program (RMP) at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre is internationally renowned. Treatment of head and neck cancer with radiotherapy is effective but can be toxic. Methods to better treat disease while reducing toxicity are needed. New software now allows us for the first time to fully accumulate dose delivered to a patient through treatment and to relate this to outcome.
The summer student will play a key role in supporting a research project harnessing this new capability. The study will retrospectively analyse swallow dysfunction and correlate this with summated dose to organs at risk. A model will be developed and internally validated to predict the likelihood of swallow dysfunction based on patient, disease and treatment characteristics. During the project the student will work closely with members of the team, gaining knowledge of HN cancer and cutting-edge treatment approaches

Key Responsibilities:
- Updating and expanding an existing database of patient and clinical factors and combine this with data for cohort of patient with longitudinal assessment of swallow via repeat assessment working with Professor Martino's lab during the period 2016-2022 for patients receiving (C)RT (Approximately 150 patients)
- With support of physics department (Dr Tadic) via MIRA, extracting dosimetric information for organs at risk from treatment delivered per patient using automated dose summation application to generate novel per patient per OAR dosimetric information
- Working with Susie Su, the bio-statistician for HN site group, will develop a novel model for prediction of swallow dysfunction
- Write up results for publication as abstracts at conference and for full manuscripts
- Currently enrolled in a relevant undergraduate program (e.g., Medicine, Radiation Sciences, Biomedical Sciences, Health Sciences, etc.).
- Strong interest in cancer research, radiation therapy, or medical research.
- Excellent organizational and communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Ability to work independently and in a team-oriented environment.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
- Coding experience and statistical training an asset but not essential
- Previous research experience is an asset but not required.
