Job Summary:

The Radiation Medicine Program (RMP) at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre is dedicated to advancing radiation therapy through cutting-edge research, clinical innovation, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Our team focuses on improving patient outcomes by integrating state-of-the-art technologies and developing novel treatment strategies. This summer student position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to a multidisciplinary research project investigating the toxicities associated with thoracic radiation treatments.

The successful candidate will support our project on predicting treatment-related toxicities for lung cancer patients treated with stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT). The student will work closely with a team of physicists, radiation oncologists, and radiation therapists to curate and analyze clinical, imaging, and treatment data, aiding in the development of predictive models.

This is a hybrid position with flexibility to work remotely while requiring an on-site presence of nominally 3 days a week on site at Princess Margaret Hospital.

This position provides an invaluable opportunity for students interested in radiation oncology research to gain hands-on experience in a dynamic and world-renowned cancer care environment. The student will be involved in cutting-edge research with the potential to contribute to international conference presentations and peer-reviewed publications.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in reviewing and curating clinical and outcome data using the RMP Lung SBRT database.

  • Conduct quality audits of RT imaging, treatment planning, and treatment data for consistency and completeness.

  • Validate machine learning-generated anatomical contours by using custom-built scripting tools and manual inspection.

  • Assist in the development of predictive models for survival and toxicity outcomes by integrating clinical, imaging, and treatment data.

  • Contribute to data cleaning and quality control to ensure high-quality datasets for analysis.

  • Prepare research reports, presentations, and documentation summarizing project findings.

  • Participate in team meetings and contribute to discussions on data analysis strategies and research methodologies.

Qualifications
  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program in Medical Physics, Radiation Sciences, Biomedical Engineering, Health Sciences, or a related field.

  • Strong interest in medical research, radiation therapy, and data analysis.

  • Experience with data management, statistical analysis, or machine learning is an asset.

  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python or MATLAB is desirable.

  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary research team.

  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
