INDIGENOUS EDUCATION RESOURCE TEACHER - ELEMENTARY

Temporary, 1.00 FTE Immediately to June 30, 2024

The Burnaby School District is on the traditional territory of the Coast Salish Nations of Musqueam, Tsleil Waututh and Squamish.

The Burnaby School District is the fourth largest in BC. The District operates 41 elementary and 8 secondary schools, including a range of district and provincial resource programs. The District supports and provides learning to 25,000 Kindergarten to Grade 12 (K12) students and to more than 6,000 adult learners through our established Burnaby Community & Continuing Education program. Burnaby School District is seeking a Temporary Indigenous resource Teacher - Elementary (1.00FTE).

Responsibilities:

  • Work collaboratively with school, District and Indigenous Education staff to enhance the school and classroom learning environment for Indigenous students K7.
  • Develop, plan and implement instructional activities and direct programming to students of Indigenous ancestry in K7 classrooms.
  • Provide ongoing leadership, advocacy and support for Indigenous learners, as well as Indigenous Education initiatives.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Education degree or equivalent.
  • Proven ability of integrating Indigenous Worldviews and perspectives into instructional practices, as well as utilizing Indigenous ways of learning and teaching.
  • Demonstrated experience working within Ministry of Education and School District policies and guidelines, including educational planning tools, file management, and audit requirements would be an asset.
  • Thorough knowledge of the Indigenous Education Enhancement Agreement.
  • Thorough understanding of colonization and its presentday effects within schools.
  • Ability to establish lasting relationships with students, parents, teachers and administrators.
  • Demonstrated experience working with inquirybased learning in relation to the redesigned curriculum.
  • Proven ability to develop and implement initiatives targeted at improving the success of Indigenous students.
  • Diverse and innovative experience centred on researchbased instruction and assessment practices.
  • Ability to support, monitor and highlight the academic and personal successes of Indigenous learners.
  • Proven leadership, organization and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience in evidencebased decision making.
  • Outstanding human relation skills including flexibility, perseverance and creativity.
  • Commitment to advocating for student learning and systemic change.
  • Preference will be given to qualified candidates of Indigenous Ancestry
