This position is for a hands-on People Leader responsible for directing the program's activities of the engineering group focused on new product development and sustaining. As Senior R&D Manager (Software / Firmware), you will lead and be a part of a high-performance team responsible for the design, implementation, and test of Software / Firmware medical systems and their associated devices.
Your Responsibilities Will Include
- Manage a talented team of engineers working on software and firmware development
- Lead Software / Firmware teams in the achievement of organizational and functional goals. Guide, coach, direct, and develop direct reports, and if applicable, drive those practices throughout their organization.
- Collaborate with senior technical leaders, project management, and inter-disciplinary partners
- Develop detailed work plans, objectives, schedules, project estimates, resource plans, and status reports. Monitor and troubleshoot performance and schedule issues. Support and enable team to achieve objectives.
- Oversee development processes to ensure compliance with industry standards, quality systems, and regulatory requirements.
- Build strategic partnerships and effectively collaborate cross-functionally to further departmental and organizational objectives.
- Work closely with cross-functional teams (engineering, clinical, regulatory, etc.) to ensure alignment, resolve challenges, and meet milestones.
- Work across multiple design/product workstreams in a capacity to resolve complex problems with robust technical solutions. Consider all critical aspects of product design during decision making including patient safety, clinical practice, high-level product performance, and product manufacturability.
- Lead by example and motivate and inspire other technical team members in the program.
- Create a strong team culture around high expectations and high performance.
- Demonstrate effective change management leadership.
- Provide clear communication to stakeholders at key technical updates.
Required Qualifications
- BS degree in Computer Information Systems or Computer Science or Engineering or relevant degree.
- Background in software/firmware development (C/C++, embedded systems, RTOS) and understanding of hardware/software integration.
- 8+ years' experience in leading Software / Firmware teams
- Required minimum years of work experience (primarily in medical device or related regulated field): 7+ years with BS, 5+ years with MS
- Demonstrated strong cross-functional collaboration, influence without authority, and project/task management enabling highly effective teams
- Passion for understanding the end user environment with a fluency in design validation and usability to confirm design solutions
- Personal drive, individual accountability and a strong bias for action
- Strong personal credibility and excellent communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
- A proven track record developing medical devices (or regulated industry products) from early stage through full product launch and sustaining
- Fluency in the IEC 60601 standards
