This position is part of the Connect 6ix project. Toronto's new Ontario Line subway is now under construction. The Connect 6ix consortium has a key role in this project, delivering the trains, the signaling system, and the operations, storage, and maintenance facility. Connect 6ix will also operate the Ontario Line for a 30-year term once it comes into service.

Role Overview

The Mechanical Package Manager will take full responsibility for the planning, coordination, and successful delivery of the complete mechanical scope of works for of the Operation Maintenance and Storage Facility (OMSF) of the Ontario Line project. This includes HVAC, plumbing, neutral gas, fire suppression, and all associated mechanical services.

The role covers full-cycle execution: from pre-construction support and early embedded works (foundations and slab-on-grade) through equipment installation, testing, commissioning, and final turnover to the operations team. The Mechanical Package Manager will ensure compliance with all applicable codes and standards, including OBC, NFPA, ASHRAE, SMACNA, and project specifications.

You will manage subcontractors on site, drive daily progress, and ensure proper coordination between mechanical works and civil, architectural, structural, and electrical packages. This role demands strong field leadership, construction sequencing control, and proactive issue resolution.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Full ownership of the mechanical package delivery on site, covering underground services, slab embedments, building systems, and final fit-out.
  • Support MEP Manager during pre-construction with estimates, material take-offs, scope definition, and construction sequencing for mechanical systems.
  • Assist with design review and coordination, tracking consultant comments and progress on mechanical drawing sets.
  • Manage day-to-day site activities of mechanical subcontractors from mobilization through to commissioning.
  • Coordinate closely with Civil, Structural, and Architectural teams to ensure all embedded mechanical services are installed prior to concrete works.
  • Ensure timely installation of HVAC systems, plumbing, neutral gas piping, and fire suppression systems as per approved design.
  • Review shop drawings and submittals for mechanical systems, ensuring compliance with project specifications before installation.
  • Track and manage submittals, shop drawings, and procurement schedules to align with construction progress.
  • Verify mechanical material deliveries and ensure compliance with approved specifications and construction sequence.
  • Monitor and review mechanical subcontractor progress claims and coordinate with MEP Manager and site management.
  • Lead and attend regular trade coordination and site progress meetings.
  • Coordinate closely with site construction teams to resolve interferences and generate RFIs as required.
  • Manage and track RFIs and ensure timely closure of outstanding technical issues.
  • Review site instructions and subcontractor change requests, ensuring proper evaluation and documentation.
  • Monitor subcontractor performance, report site issues promptly, and ensure quality inspections and field testing are completed (plumbing, HVAC, fire suppression).
  • Ensure equipment is properly installed, connected, tested, and commissioned in line with project milestones.
  • Assist the MEP Manager and site management in preparing the building occupancy program and commissioning schedule.
  • Support commissioning activities and turnover of systems to O&M team, ensuring that all mechanical systems are fully tested and commissioned for occupancy.
  • Review and compile mechanical close-out documents in coordination with quality assurance and project handover teams.
  • Capture and report lessons learned throughout the project to support continuous improvement.
  • Maintain strong communication and collaboration with site teams, subcontractors, consultants, and project management.
  • Proactively manage daily progress, identify risks, and resolve site issues to maintain project momentum.
  • Enforce strict compliance with health, safety, and environmental standards across all mechanical activities.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, Construction Management, or a related field.
  • PMP/LEED certification are an asset.
  • Minimum 8-12 years of experience in mechanical construction management, with full-cycle delivery responsibility.
  • Proven experience managing mechanical scopes on infrastructure, industrial, or transportation projects.
  • Knowledge of health and safety regulations and procedures.

Hands-on experience in:

  • Underground services and slab-on-grade mechanical works.
  • HVAC system installation and ductwork coordination.
  • Plumbing and fire suppression systems.
  • Equipment installation, testing, and commissioning.
  • Experience with subcontractor management and multi-trade coordination on complex sites.
  • Experience in rail, transportation, or industrial facility construction preferred.
  • Experience with LEED building construction is an asset.

Strong understanding of:

  • OBC, NFPA, ASHRAE, SMACNA, and related Canadian standards.
  • Mechanical testing, inspection, and commissioning procedures.
  • Construction sequencing and multi-discipline coordination.

Proficiency in:

  • AutoCAD, BIM coordination tools, Bluebeam.
  • Construction management software (MS Project, Procore, etc.).
  • Document control systems and workflows for submittals, RFIs, and approvals.
