Job Summary

The Officer, Technical Training - Engineering and Welding is responsible for training engineering employees in Welding Fundamentals and Thermite Welding. The incumbent is required to train, mentor, coach and qualify employees on various types of welding related to the safe operation of freight, maintenance of track components and joint elimination. The role maintains the welding facility, equipment, job aids, and scheduled maintenance records for employees utilized for training purposes, as well as scheduling employees.

Main Responsibilities
Training Delivery

Act as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for the creation and update of training materials

Provide training to employees through classroom instruction, hands-on demonstrations, and field training exercises

Maintain an understanding of how to practically apply skills related to the welding manual, including safety procedures, inspection, and preventative maintenance

Maintain an understanding of how to apply Canadian Rail Operating Rules (CROR) and General Engineering Instructions (GEI) as they relate to Engineering employees, track protection, and the maintenance of track components

Foster a culture of safety leadership to ensure the safety of all employees, operations, and the public

Evaluate trainees' ability to demonstrate tasks proficiently

Administer and grade exams

Complete performance and qualifying documents and ensure all training events are incorporated in the Learning Management System (LMS)

Carry out other Engineering-related training as assigned

Maintain and Upgrade Facility Equipment

Assess functionality of tools and equipment for hands-on training components prior to training

Repair all malfunctioning tools and equipment

Develop Comprehensive Training Plan

Collaborate with Managers and Senior Managers to resolve and identify functional training needs

Develop the training delivery plan

Establish a training delivery schedule designed to meet training needs

Working Conditions

The role has standard working conditions in an office and field training environment with a regular workweek from Monday to Friday. The incumbent must be available to work night shifts and weekends when necessary. The role requires occasional travel (up to 25%) to carry out field training and quality audits. The amount of travel is dependent on the location of major production gangs and zone employees who require qualification assessments.

Requirements
Experience

Engineering Track Welding, Construction and Maintenance

Between 5 to 10 years of experience in Engineering track welding, construction maintenance

o Experience as a Welding Supervisor

Any experience for these above would be considered as an asset

Education/Certification/Designation

High School Diploma or General Educational Development (GED)

Qualified in CROR and GEI

Qualified in track welding

Qualified on numerous types of welding and track component maintenance

Valid Driver's Licence

Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or other related field such as Physics or Mathematics

Certified Track Welder from an accredited organization

Any designation for these above would be considered as an asset

Knowledge of CN's Engineering department and field operations, including operation of various track welding equipment and process

Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word)

Fluently bilingual, both written and verbal (English, French)

Knowledge of Systems Applications and Products (SAP) and LMS

Any knowledge for any of the above would be considered as an asset
