Fibre Yard Supervisor
Salary Range: $95,000 to $105,000
Location: Meadowbank, BC
As a Fibre Yard Supervisor at Drax, you are responsible for the overall Safety, compliance, production, and cost control of all incoming fibre deliveries as well as managing the fibre flow to the plant. Fibre flow is a critical part of our business, and fibre management is our highest cost. Responsible for running the fibre plan spreadsheet and operationalizing the fibre production plan onsite, working together with the Plant Manager to build the production plan.
About the role:Team & Leadership
- Direct the day-to-day performance of 12 direct reports in the Yard and Quality Control positions.
- Responsibilities include managing daily tasks, approving vacation requests, performance management, and conducting employee reviews.
- Supervise team members throughout the pellet manufacturing process, ensuring compliance with safety and environmental regulations, as well as production, quality, and operating policies and procedures.
- Provide technical training to direct reports in areas such as mobile equipment operation, safety protocols, confined space procedures, hazard identification, fire safety systems, and other OSHA-required training.
- Conduct annual performance reviews with all yard employees.
- Complete administrative tasks, including overseeing shift payroll, approving overtime, managing holiday requests, and handling any necessary performance management.
- Schedule all yard employees to ensure continuous coverage while meeting the needs of the employees.
- Review and approve hourly payroll through the time clock and HRIS system.
- Coordinate holiday planning to ensure continuous coverage of essential positions within the plant.
- Liaise with other Drax management personnel, including HR, Maintenance, Operations Safety, Training, and Senior Management.
- Regularly audit the quality process related to scales.
Safety
- Ensure safe daily operations of the fiber yard by hosting daily tailgate meetings and weekly toolbox talks for staff.
- Perform safety observations, audit mobile equipment check sheets, and promptly address safety deficiencies.
- Participate in safety programs and use our policy system to record safety conversations and training.
- Lead by example, prioritizing Drax's values and safety.
- Ensure employees are properly trained and their competency is documented.
- Maintain Drax's high standards of cleanliness in the plant and mobile equipment yard with team involvement.
- Use Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for chemicals and ensure employees are trained on storage, use, PPE, and disposal.
Operations
- Manage incoming deliveries and fiber flow into the plant, ensuring safe operations and quality pellet production.
- Collaborate with the plant manager and Fiber team to implement the Fiber Plan on-site.
- Oversee daily fiber scale operations and coordinate compliance calibrations.
- Ensure environmental compliance in the yard and promptly address issues.
- Manage the incoming fiber mix and maintain quality standards with the operations team.
- Handle log inventory, including rotation and moisture management.
- Coordinate road maintenance activities such as grading and snow removal.
- Work with maintenance to manage mobile equipment, report issues, and schedule repairs.
- Schedule drone flights for resource management and thermal imaging as needed.
- Supervise WESP maintenance tasks on shutdown days, ensuring proper staging and cleanup.
- Manage the inventory of WESP chemicals and assist with Loader/Button Top operations when necessary.
About youYou'll possess the following skills, abilities and Experience required:
- Completion of high school education; related post-secondary education is a plus.
- 2-5 years of supervisory experience in a manufacturing environment is preferred.
- Experience in fibre handling, fibre storage, and log yard management and operations is required. The yard supervisor should have a good understanding of fibre mixtures and quality control management for the materials in the yard.
- Mobile equipment experience, including previous operation of Butt-N-Top machines, various loaders, skid steers, telehandlers, and counterbalance forklifts, is required. This role also includes training employees at the plant on the safe operation of this equipment.
- A comprehensive understanding of WorkSafe BC laws, due diligence, and mobile equipment training standards is essential to lead by example.
- Strong proficiency in Excel is necessary, including the ability to build and maintain data in spreadsheets and report to management and the fibre team.
