Job Summary
The Dangerous Goods Officer (DGO) is responsible for performing field operations, including emergency response to incidents involving dangerous goods (DG) and environmentally sensitive commodities, deliver emergency response training and outreach programs, execute compliance audits, inspections, and efficiency testing. The incumbent assists in ensuring compliance with regulations by providing consultation services to CN departments
Main Responsibilities
Outreach and Training
Maintain positive relationship with regulators, public agencies, customers, and industry partners
Meet with various stakeholders to discuss safety and emergency response to dangerous goods incidents
Provide information and training to response agencies through CN's commitment to TransCAER
Provide assistance to CN Operations with required dangerous goods training
Regulatory Compliance
Function as CN Dangerous Goods liaison to federal, provincial, state, and local agencies
Participate at integrated safety audits
Perform yard and train inspection regularly to ensure CN's regulatory compliance.
Serve as Subject Matter Expert (SME) to local operations for dangerous goods regulatory compliance
Emergency Response Preparedness
Provide and facilitate regional emergency response activities to ensure safe and effective emergency response
Respond to incidents as needed to provide tactical intervention and mitigation activities
Audit emergency response contractors to assess their response capability within their territory
Inspect and maintain CN emergency response equipment
Deploy and use CN Dangerous Goods Group field equipment effectively
Working Conditions
The role is performed in a combination of office and outdoor environment in various types of weather conditions with a regular workweek from Monday to Friday. The role requires being available on-call 24/7 to respond to critical incidences. The incumbent must be available to work night shifts and weekends when necessary. Due to the nature of the role, the incumbent must be able to meet tight deadlines, handle pressure, and stress. The position requires wearing protective clothing and respiratory protection as conditions warrant and working in hazardous conditions. The role requires frequent travel (up to 35%).

Experience
Hazmat Emergency Response
Minimum 2 to 5 years of hands on hazmat emergency response experience
Any experience for these above would be considered as an asset
Education/Certification/Designation
Hazardous Materials Technician
Advanced Tank Car Specialist
High School Diploma or equivalent
Trained in Incident Command
Trained in industrial Firefighting
Trained in Foam Trailer Use
Degree in Chemistry, Fire Science or associated field
Qualified as an Advanced Tank Car Specialist
Trained in Incident Command with completion of NIMS 300 and 400
Any designation for these above would be considered as an asset
