POSITION SUMMARY
The Supervisor, Dock Operations is responsible for the safe, timely and cost-effective performance of the VTS terminal and providing leadership to dock personnel relating to freight movement into and out of the terminal. The Supervisor, Dock Operations provides hands-on supervision and coaching to a team of employees and ensures that all customer service requirements are achieved or exceeded while ensuring full compliance with company policies and procedures and legislation governing the workplace. They supervise and lead the dock team by monitoring, measuring, coaching and developing individual and team performance. They monitor daily metrics and implement improvements to operations in pursuit of operational excellence, a safe workplace, and an exceptional customer experience.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Leads and promotes a culture where Health & Safety is the priority. Provides leadership and support for Health & Safety initiatives at the terminal.
Operates within and ensures full compliance with the Code of Business Conduct, company policies and procedures, and all statutes and legislation governing the workplace.
Works with terminal team to ensure compliance with the company's health and safety policies, and related legislation.
Evaluates safety, security and housekeeping levels on a daily basis by reviewing warehouse operations to ensure warehouse is clean, secure and well organized, and that damage to product, equipment and facility is prevented.
Reports engineering/maintenance issues to Chief Engineer for resolution, and follows up as needed to ensure they are addressed in a timely manner to reduce the impact on operations.
Ensures Materials Handling Equipment (MHE) is kept in good working condition and meets or exceeds the standards outlined in company policy and applicable legislation.
Works with regional Food Safety lead and Terminal Manager to implement and maintain Cold Chain Assurance programs such as HACCP, including program development, ensuring compliance, employee training and compliance reporting.
Works with regional Health & Safety leads to implement health & safety incident prevention programs.
Implements modified work programs and accommodation plans.
Participates in Joint Health & Safety meetings.
Leads daily Dock operations by prioritizing activities, and providing proactive leadership and direction to the Dock team. Ensures the shift follows established procedures in alignment with the company vision, mission, strategy and culture.
Monitors, measures, coaches and develops direct reports, ensures adherence to policies and procedures, provides recognition, evaluates and provides feedback on performance, addresses performance concerns and resolves problems.
Assists the Manager, Terminal Operations in developing and leading regular site communication sessions to review safety initiatives, site performance and other local initiatives.
Participates in the hiring, training and development of staff.
Leads or participates in establishing work schedules and ensures that they are correctly implemented and that jobs are assigned and completed effectively. Tracks daily attendance of warehouse employees, including sick days, vacation and floater days. Monitors attendance and addresses attendance management issues.
Spends 90-100% of their day on the floor leading employee performance on Safety, Service and Productivity.
Champions company-wide programs for increasing employee engagement, communications and people development.
Leads their team in providing the highest levels of service to all customers with whom they interact, whether internal or external, with the goal of continuously improving the customer experience.
Works with the Manager, Terminal Operations, and leadership team to implement Key Performance Indicators (KPI's).
Oversees and monitors customer service levels provided and implements continuous service improvements.
Implements improved operational processes that enhance capabilities to meet/exceed service standards.
Ensures organizational adherence and accountability to standard operating procedures.
Ensures that customer orders are picked & shipped in a timely fashion within prescribed cost levels.
Works with the Terminal Operations leadership team to set operational goals, measuring and reporting results on a timely basis.
Implements a system of controls to ensure that service levels and operational performance goals are met within prescribed cost control, revenue, and EBITDA parameters.
Prepares reports and other information related to the Dock. In conjunction with the Financial Planning & Analysis team and Manager - Costing & Optimization is responsible for preparing and analyzing performance reports in regards to identified Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), budgets and forecasts. Monitors results on an ongoing basis and adjust Dock operations as required.
Manages equipment, including the development and implementation of a plan to allocate equipment to jobs, monitoring the cleanliness and working condition of all equipment (i.e. forklifts, handjacks, etc), overseeing adjustments and/or repairs as necessary, and coordinating with Engineering to recommend adjustments to quantity and type of equipment to meet business needs and minimize costs.
Establishes key daily activities for Employees ensuring responsibilities are clearly defined and performance objectives are being met.
Ensures the efficient & safe operation of all materials handling equipment.
Recommends continuous improvement efforts and identifies cost saving and growth initiatives.
Participates in claims management and ensures that goods in our care and control are held in the best possible condition.
Supports and assists the Manager, Terminal Operations, in all cost control measures, which include overtime management, expense control and productivity.
Provides ongoing training, direction and coaching to dock staff to ensure all accessorial activities are logged and captured for the purposes of operational visibility and accurate customer billing.
Continuously grows and develops operational knowledge and leadership capabilities by participating in professional development opportunities.
Performs other duties as assigned in accordance with the company vision, mission, strategy and culture.

KEY REQUIREMENTS

Minimum of three (3) years of experience in a frontline supervisory role in a warehousing/transportation environment.
Post-secondary education in Operations, Logistics or related field.
First Aid certification is an asset.
Excellent people leadership abilities and a dedication to continuous improvement.
Approachable, positive demeanor with a hands-on and team-oriented work style.
Knowledge of HACCP.
Commitment to health and safety in the workplace.
Proven ability to supervise a team working in a fast-paced warehouse environment to ensure accuracy, compliance and a team culture of excellence.

Experience with warehousing software applications
Microsoft Office skills with an emphasis on Word, Excel and Outlook.
Experience working effectively in a unionized environment governed by collective agreements an asset.
