Role
Reporting to the Field Area Manager, the Commissioning Technologist Student will be a part of the Commissioning team, and take part in commissioning and testing primary and secondary power equipment in the field which includes maintaining medium to high-voltage substation power delivery equipment such as breakers, switchgears, circuit breakers, relays and transformers. The Commissioning Technologist student will be paired with a senior and given the opportunity to see many aspects of the industry.
Responsibilities
This is a junior position and the responsibilities listed below are things that will be taught on the job, the junior commissioning technologist will be paired up with a senior to mentor them while they begin their career.
- Work safely alongside all members of the construction crew
- Acceptance and maintenance testing of electrical equipment
- Installation, commissioning and maintenance of protection and control equipment in medium to high-voltage transmission substations
- Interpret blueprints, analyze test reports and recommend corrective actions.
- Work safely around high voltage equipment such as Circuit breakers, transformers, switches and control circuits for protection, indication and monitoring systems
- Calibrate electronic equipment and instruments, when needed
- Be able to learn various types of manufacturer's test equipment:
- TTR
- Omicron secondary test sets
- Winding resistance
- Omicron CPC 100
- CT saturator
Schedules will typically be 2 weeks on 2 weeks off.
10-hour days (7:00 am to 5:30pm). Overtime paid at time and a half after 10 hours in a day as well as after 40 hours in a week.
Travel time to and from site will be paid at base rate.

Requirements
Qualifications
- Obtaining a diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology from an accredited post-secondary institution or Degree in Electrical Engineering
- Experience in substation would be a major asset, ie. 144kV and 240kV
- Understanding of relay testing with various equipment; Omicron, GE, Manta, Meggar
- Understanding and basic knowledge of apparatus found in a HV substation would be considered an asset
- Understanding and basic knowledge of testing software would be considered an asset (Omicron Test Universe, Doble M4000, AcSELerator, Seimens Digsi)
- Competent and comfortable working with computers and spreadsheets.
- Dedicated team player with strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Demonstrated problem solving and analytical skills with the ability to work within strict deadlines.
- Demonstrate a willingness to work safely and show concern for environmental, health and safety issues in the workplace.
- Must have a valid Class 5 driver's license.
- Able to work comfortably at heights
- Able to work alone or with minimal supervision
- Willing to work out of town and on rotation, i.e. 4 on 3 off, or 8 on and 6 off work schedule
