Role
Reporting to the Estimating Manger, the role of the Lead Estimator is to oversee the technical reviews with estimators on proposals and prepare complete electrical, structural and civil cost estimates. The Lead Estimator will lead and support a small estimating group as per the direction set by the Estimating Manger. The Lead Estimator identifies value engineering and other cost saving opportunities for the organization. Ensures project proposals are complete with accurate project schedules; work execution plans, and all required deliverables are fulfilled in conjunction with the proposal coordinators.
Responsibilities
- Lead and support the project estimators with technical support. With a large focus on the "in progress" portion of the estimating process; Assessing the technical project requirements & personnel needs.
- Analyze project plans, specifications, and other documentation to prepare cost estimates.
- Collaborate with the Estimating Manager to implement streamlined procedures and processes while effectively communicating key estimating insights to leadership.
- Assess project risks, constraints, and potential cost savings opportunities.
- Utilize estimating software and tools to improve efficiency and accuracy.
- Assist Estimating manager with utilizing and benchmarking historical data.
- Prepare complete cost estimates for electrical transmission, generation, distribution, and substation projects.
- Collaborate with project managers and engineers to ensure estimates align with project execution plans.
- Participate in bid negotiations and provide support during contract award processes.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of market conditions, industry standards, and emerging technologies in the electrical high-voltage sector.
- Mentor estimators and support them with career development
- Support Estimating manager with identification and implementation of areas of process improvement
- Additional duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Electrical Technologist Diploma, Journeyman Electrician required, or a bachelor's degree in engineering considered an asset
- Candidate must possess experience in understanding blueprints, specifications, proposals, and other documentation to prepare time/cost/labour estimates for projects and services
- 5 or more years of experience in the Electrical High Voltage, Utility or Renewables Industry.
- Possessing estimating knowledge of electric distribution, transmission and substation projects is required with strong understanding of protection and control schemes.
- Ability to prepare construction schedules in Microsoft Project and/or Primavera
- Proficiency in all applications within Microsoft Office Suite
- Must excel in analytical, organizational, verbal, and written communication skills
- Self-driven and can stay on-task for extended periods of time.
- A team player who can work with various partners from start until finish.
- Travel may be necessary throughout Canada – must hold a valid driver's license
