The Opportunity:

Liberty mutual Canada invites you to join our market-leading culture and bring your expertise and enthusiasm to a challenging and fulfilling role as Assistant Vice President, Technical Claims.

With minimal supervision, you will handle a wide variety of complex claims including Casualty, Financial and Professional Services claims, steering them from inception to resolution with expertise and autonomy. You will also assist with other claims as required to support local needs.

This role offers the opportunity to provide mentorship and coaching to junior staff, imparting wisdom and experience on coverage, liability analysis, damages and strategic planning.

Recognized as a technical expert, you will offer invaluable support and insights to enhance our underwriting efforts, as required, by notably attending client and broker meetings, contributing to branch activities and fostering strong relationships with key stakeholders.

This role will empower you to make a significant impact on our claim resolution process and shape the future of claims in a collaborative environment where your skills in coaching and training will nurture the next generation of claims handlers.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Champion and model our Liberty values and Guidelines for Inclusion to drive market leading culture and ensure positive employee engagement.
  • Establish and build your network of senior individuals within our organization, and with our customers and brokers.
  • Investigate and analyze coverage, liability and damages, including drafting of coverage position letters.
  • Review reports from all external sources to evaluate the loss to determine coverage and claim disposition.
  • Within prescribed settlement authority, establish appropriate reserves for both indemnity and expenses and review on a regular basis to ensure adequacy. Make recommendations for reserves at appropriate level for claims outside of authority level.
  • Manage the litigation process through the retention and direction of counsel. Adhere to the litigation guidelines to include budget and bill review and payments.
  • Pro-actively manage the case resolution process. Actively participate in market meetings, mediations, settlement conferences, pre-trials and arbitrations as well as negotiation discussions within limit of settlement authority.
  • Identify and communicate specific claim trends and account and/or policy issues to management, underwriting and risk services. Prepare comprehensive reports as required.
  • Provide claims marketing services by meeting with brokers, risk managers and reinsurers.
  • Provide support to the claims team, underwriters and brokers by providing claims advice, as needed, including attendance at claim review meetings.
  • Liaison with our domestic broker force and underwriting team to ensure management and maintenance of customer expectations and service needs on existing and prospective Liberty Mutual Canada business.
  • Participate in both internal and external industry events including attending and giving presentations.
  • Participate in claims audits, claim reviews and other local and GRS Claims Initiatives, as required.
  • Coach and mentor more junior claims handlers, including coverage issues, liability and damage analysis.
  • Able and willing to travel throughout Canada and/or the United States, or other areas, as required.
  • Maintain dual diary reviews of specific claim files providing feedback and guidance; providing training where appropriate.
  • Perform related duties as requested.

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Bachelors' and/or advanced degree/diploma (experience may substitute for education)
  • CIP/FCIP an asset
  • 10+ years of related claims experience - complex claims across Canada and the U.S. involving CGL, Construction Liability, Auto, EIL, E&O/Prof. Liab, D&O, EPL
  • Highly advanced knowledge of claims handling concepts, practices and techniques, to include but not limited to coverage, and product line knowledge
  • Advanced experience handling umbrella and excess insurance claims
  • Advanced knowledge of law and insurance regulations in various jurisdictions
  • Demonstrated superior verbal and written communications skills
  • High level of advanced analytical, decision making and negotiation skills
  • Written and verbal knowledge of French is a strong asset
