The Opportunity:
The primary focus of this role is to lead our Canadian Global Transactions Solutions (GTS) business. You will lead a team in the underwriting, business development and profitable growth of our GTS business in the Canadian market. You'll ensure the GTS team contributes to the success of Liberty Mutual Canada's Vision: to lead with purpose and to support the growth, innovation, and impact of Canadian business. Duties and Responsibilities:
- Champion and model our Liberty Values and Guidelines for Inclusion to drive market leading culture and ensure positive employee engagement.
- Accountable for meeting/exceeding annual budgets for Global Transaction Solution (GTS) in Canada. Contribute to team results through underwriting and production efforts, including business/legal review of public and private M&A deals; analysis of risk; reviewing transaction documents, disclosure process, diligence reports; and discussions with deal team as part of underwriting transactional risk insurance products.
- Enhance Liberty's market presence with key brokers/clients across Canada. Attend and participate in relevant industry/association sponsored events to increase Liberty's profile.
- Manage and support the growth and development of a team of underwriters. Champion the development of technical and business development skills and support a high degree of employee engagement through a culture of success, empowerment and accountability.
- Evaluate and manage resources to support profitable growth, and ensure the team meets or exceeds new business and profit targets. Identify strategic areas for growth and support associated business planning and forecasting.
- Work with Global Underwriting leaders, Operations, Technology, Product & Risk Services, and Alternative Risk Solutions to identify and prioritize initiatives to drive best-in-class service, productivity and multi-line business opportunities.
- Stay abreast of Canadian M&A claim trends, providing recommendations and adjusting underwriting strategies to ensure long-term profitability of GTS lines of business.
- Champion our key value proposition and ensure that we consistently offer top-level customer service to brokers and clients. Ensure these key standards are maintained across the organization and provide support for the GTS underwriting team to expand our presence in the market.
- Responsible for the monthly financial reporting of the team's underwriting results. Assist with additional financial reporting and planning, as necessary.
- Promote a culture of accountability in data capture and integrity within the team, ensuring booking and coding is actively managed and cross-checked, as appropriate.
- Stay informed on any key legislative or regulatory changes affecting regional offerings or industry segments.
- Lead thought leadership initiatives that showcase Liberty's expertise, solidify brand reputation and position Liberty as a valued partner in the eyes of customers
- Perform related duties as requested, including report preparation, presentations, special projects, and directing or conducting audits to ensure the success of the region.
Skills & Qualifications:
- 7+ years underwriting experience, leadership experience preferred.
- LL.B./J.D. and member in good standing with a Canadian Professional Law Society preferred.
- M&A and transactional risk underwriting experience required.
- Experience training, coaching, evaluating and developing a team of people, while ensuring accountability for meeting goals.
- Proficient with business planning and Profit and Loss (P&L) management including budget setting, reporting and driving profitable growth.
- Proven track record of leading strong broker and client relationships; providing market leading service, fostering an engaging work environment, and championing operational and technology initiatives aimed at enhancing underwriting productivity.
- Excellent communicator, active listener, critical thinker and problem solver.
- Self-starter with superior time management and delegation skills.
- Ability to build relationships and exercise influence while working cross-functionally.
- Strong analytical and negotiation skills.
