New Flyer is seeking an experienced Electrical Technical Lead- Transit Architecture, Hardware to join our team. As the Electrical Technical Lead, you will be responsible for providing technical leadership and oversight to NPD product developments as they proceed through the departmental design process. The position's goal will be to provide support such that the engineering deliverables for the design or product are completed on-time and meet and/or exceed requirements & expectations at all points in the product lifecycle.

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

  • Acts as direct engineering liaison to Project Leaders and NPD Engineering Managers to ensure that product design requirements are clearly conveyed and understood while documenting all technical issues for NPD Designers.
  • Conducts advanced risk assessment/mitigation planning for future design work and collaborates with Project Leaders and Engineering Managers to ensure tasking and critical path are in place.
  • Facilitates communication between NPD and the users of NPD design information including but not limited to Production Engineering, Customer Service, Publications, Manufacturing, Supply, etc. Acts as designated engineering liaison & facilitates cross-functional communications as required. Ensures success of those both up or downstream by optimizing engineering output.
  • Creates, Checks and Approves Engineering Designs, Engineering Documents, Test Reports, Instructions to Service, Shop Floor Instructions and other documents as authorized.
  • Reports status on development activities to NPD leadership.
  • Participates in training and monitoring of employee's performance.
  • Supports on-going creation and enhancement of documentation related to design release processes, theory of operation and high-level vehicle functionality.
  • Works with Service Manager/RPSM/Vendor to expedite problem solving and subsequent engineering releases related to field buses and ensures final results are applied into NPD design releases as required.
  • Common Functions with other NPD Roles:
  1. Responsible: Product requirements and technical content are developed and maintained in accordance with specifications.
  2. Responsible: Documentation of the appropriate use of supplier's product for the application from review of supplier's requirements and intended operation and developmental discussions for fitness of use in the New Flyer product including
  3. Supplier Application Approval and any associated testing and customer configuration audits.
  4. Responsible: Performance of applicable FMEA and Hazard Analysis exercises.
  5. Responsible: Completes product launch integration to Production, Quality Assurance, Customer Service Support and other departments as directed.
  6. Supports: Bid documents such as customer specifications, technical summaries, supplier quotations, approved equals and others are reviewed for appropriate interpretation and compliance.
  7. Supports: Project Load defined to meet Department Capacity and Strategic project development. Ensures project scope aligns with the short and long-term department goals.
  8. Consults: Interacts with suppliers (which may include end customer) on design-related issues during development that may require an end goal of Supplier Application Approval.
  9. Consults: Performance of project design reviews.
  10. Consults: Creates other technical documents such as instructions to service, Shop Floor Instructions as authorized.
  11. Consults: Creation of Engineering designs that meet customer specifications, Technical Summaries, other contract
  12. documents and any applicable standards or industry best practices. Ensures designs meet performance, buildability, design efficiency and align with outlined design philosophy.
  13. Consults: Completes controlled testing of components and system to meet contractual obligations, vendor requirements (SAA), ensure product reliability, performance and verify component fit. Test reports produced as required.
  14. Consults: Completes Engineering drawings and release documents in accordance with engineering procedures.

WHAT YOU NEED TO BE SUCCESSFUL:

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology Diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum five years electrical design-based knowledge related to essential functions in transit architecture related to hardware and above job functions.
  • Proficiency in Unigraphics or equivalent 3D CAD modeling software is an asset. and associated design release and testing processes.
  • Proficiency with transit architecture design for all configurations including CAN backbone concepts, schematic, harnesses, power cables and panels.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively prioritize and manage multiple concurrent projects.
  • Highly analytical problem-solver with demonstrated talent for identifying, understanding and creating workable solutions.
  • Demonstrated ability to multitask and work efficiently in a high demanding fast paced work environment.
  • Motivated self-starter with high level of initiative and ability to work independently.
  • Ability to work, supervise and contribute to a team orientated environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience in research and development in the areas of electrical supporting new systems will be considered an asset.
