ABOUT THE CONSTRUCTION SAFETY NOVA SCOTIA
Construction Safety Nova Scotia (CSNS) is an industry founded and funded membership based not-for-profit association focused on improving Occupational Health & Safety outcomes in the construction industry. Driven by our values of relationships, quality, and innovation and with the support of the Board of Directors, the CSNS team enables a safer construction industry by engaging with the membership organizations to reduce injuries and improve safety culture. CSNS provides training and services with qualified, competent, and engaging safety professionals. Working with diverse construction employers & employees, youth, and people throughout Nova Scotia, CSNS enables stakeholders to develop the knowledge, values, and skills needed for safer work practices. OVERVIEW OF THE ROLE
Under the direction of and reporting to OHS Team Lead with accountability to the Manager, Safety Services, the OHS Advisor plays a crucial role designing and delivering CSNS safety training, conducting Certificate of Recognition (COR) audits and advising members on training and safety matters. The OHS Advisor also participates in ongoing business development, new program initiatives as well as provides input and quality assurance review of training materials to enhance the skills, knowledge, and experience of learners. The OHS Advisor plays a key role in ensuring training delivery, audit and advisory services represent the brand and reputation of Construction Safety Nova Scotia as a leader in workplace safety positively influencing the occupational health and safety culture within the Nova Scotia construction sector.
EDUCATION, CREDENTIALS, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
- Post secondary education in occupational health and safety or other related field or experience.
- Fall Protection and Confined Space experience, preferably with certification.
- Must have or be willing to pursue a recognized professional OH&S designation (CRSP is preferred) acceptable to Construction Safety Nova Scotia.
- Subject matter expertise in the Nova Scotia Occupational Health Safety Act and Regulations as well as understanding of WCB, CSA standards applicable to the construction industry and experience in a safety related industry or environment.
- Experience in an adult training or learning role, preferably within the construction sector.
- Strong computer skills, specifically Microsoft Office Suite with emphasis on PowerPoint.
- Provincial travel requires a valid driver's license and a clean driving record.

- Demonstrates initiative in professional development either individually, or under the direction of management, by attending training sessions. Actively seeks new knowledge in area of expertise to contribute to the goals and objectives of the organization.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
TRAINING
- Completes administrative preparation for training courses (confirms registration, location, schedule, class lists, etc.) with supporting teams.
- Prepares for and delivers training programs to members and other customers, meeting industry and CSNS standards.
- Identifies and resolves issues pertaining to training preparation, delivery, and evaluation.
- Participates in quality management and continuous improvement monitoring of existing training programs and services.
- Participates in the development and regular review of training presentations and student support materials to keep them relevant, accurate, and reflective of the latest industry trends, best practices, and compliance with relevant industry standards, legal requirements, and compliance regulations.
- Identifies, addresses, and manages internal and external stakeholder/customer training, program, and service needs/concerns.
- Maintains and submits up-to-date training records to ensure members receive training certifications in a timely manner compliant with legislative requirements.
- Provides trainer and participant feedback to contribute to the effectiveness of training programs through student evaluations and other mechanisms.
- Collaboratively works with team members to analyze feedback to measure the impact of training and make improvements as necessary.
- Provides support to other trainers and facilitators, ensuring team effectiveness in CSNS training delivery.
- Works with other OHS Advisors and Safety Services leadership and supports business development and service growth opportunities. This may include enhancements to advisory services related to construction/safety equipment, technology, training services, and auditing.
COR AUDIT AND EVALUATION
- Provides guidance and advice to members about Certificate of Recognition (COR) Audit requirements.
- Conducts comprehensive safety inspections and risk assessments of the workplace.
- Verifies compliance with safety regulations, industry standards, and internal safety policies.
- Identifies potential hazards and risks to health and safety within the workplace.
- Analyzes incident reports and safety records to identify trends and areas of improvement.
- Collaborates with CSNS member management to provide advice on development of effective safety protocols and procedures.
- Prepares detailed audit reports outlining findings and recommendations to enhance workplace safety.
- Conducts follow up audits to monitor and track safety improvements.
- Provides guidance to CSNS member management on best practices for maintaining a safe work environment.
- Keeps abreast of industry-specific regulations and standards to ensure compliance during the auditing process.
- Provides recommendations to issue Certificate of Recognition (COR) certification and/or provides remedial activities for member follow up.
- Provides COR audit data and feedback, as required, to inform CSNS performance outcomes.
SAFETY ADVISORY AND SUBJECT MATTER EXPERTISE
- Promotes the value-added services available to members and construction stakeholders through individual consultation and group presentations.
- Carries out speaking engagements relative to safety topics of interest and other areas of expertise at the direction of leadership.
- Provides safety subject matter expertise to the internal CSNS safety program and advisory service to members as a best practice leader in employer safety.
- Develops and updates internal safety policies, procedures, and practices, as required.
- Participates in assigned projects and initiatives to advance CSNS program and service offerings.
- Attends CSNS sanctioned meetings and events to enable the effective delivery of member services.
- Other designated responsibilities are determined by the OHS Advisor Team Lead or Manager, Safety Services, as required.
