The THHM will be an engaging, vibrant welcoming place for all to experience and explore.

The Position

The Town is currently searching for a motivated, energetic, and enthusiastic individual to join our team as Museum Manager. As the successful candidate, you will manage and oversee the daily operations of the Torbay History House & Museum in keeping with museum policies, mission, vision, available resources and accepted professional practices. This includes delivering exceptional customer service, managing the Museum's extensive artifacts collection, and programming for the internal space and external garden space. This position will continue with existing successful programming and projects, and develop and implement new program initiatives with a focus on creating an engaging guest experience while preserving Torbay's past.

Major Duties & Responsibilities

Specifically, the Museum Manager will:

  • Promote, manage and oversee the daily operations of Torbay History House & Museum in keeping with museum policies, mission, vision, available resources and accepted professional practices.
  • Oversee the incredible collection of Irish Ancestry Research and Historical information referred to as the Mannion Collection.
  • Provide direction and governance through strategic, interpretive, and operational planning.
  • Supervise Torbay History House staff and volunteers in keeping with the policies and procedures of the Town of Torbay.
  • Take responsibility for the artifact and archival collections, including study, research, cataloguing, exhibition, conservation and documentation.
  • Work collaboratively with educators, designers, and artists in the development, creation, interpretation, and installation of special exhibitions and temporary displays; help develop possible traveling exhibitions.
  • Develop and deliver programming for the public and educational users that supports the interpretation of History House's collections and aligns with provincial curriculum outcomes.
  • Maintain the permanent gallery, keeping it fresh and up to date through rotations and new displays.
  • Engage residents and community groups, including local schools, businesses, and communities of practice.
  • Research and apply for grants and funding avenue/sponsorships that support the Torbay History House and Museum.
  • Perform all other duties that are necessary to operate the Torbay History House and Museum.
  • Administrative Assignments include the Torbay Museum Advisory Committee and the Torbay Folk Arts Council (Liaison).

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will:

  • Hold a relevant degree in museum studies and/or cultural heritage which may include folklore, history, heritage management or related areas combined with management experience and knowledge of relevant archival and museum practices.
  • Have a minimum of two years' relevant experience in the development and delivery of interpretation programming and an understanding of community development, research methods, and the care of archival/museum collections, and curating exhibits.
  • Demonstrate previous experience and expertise in budget management, project coordination, and a deep understanding of the cultural sector.
  • Provide relevant experience managing multiple staff and volunteers, collaborating with external stakeholders and community partners.
  • Highlight budgetary insight and successful grant writing, superb customer service skills, the ability to work independently, and strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Present an equivalent combination of experience and training acceptable to the Town.
