Creative Entrepreneurship & Development Manager

Are you energized by entrepreneurial opportunities for makers, marketing local craft and design, and finding ways to boost the profile of Cape Breton artists? Cape Breton Centre for Craft & Design (the Centre) is looking for a hands-on leader, ready to step into the management of creative development opportunities alongside day-to-day revenue generation for the organization and entrepreneurial support of our valued craft members.

As the Creative Entrepreneurship & Development Manager, your work will tap into the potential of both the Centre and the artists and craftspeople we work with to broaden our economic development potential and communities we reach.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Development: evaluate, monitor and report on existing revenue generating activities; grow creative revenue opportunities, enhance online retail space.
  • Retail Gallery: manage inventory, product assessment, consignment, and curation of the Gallery Shop; manage retail staff and oversee sales; work with the Marketing Manager on promotion of the shop and artists.
  • Creative Entrepreneurship: support member artists in navigating the business ecosystem and exploring avenues for funding more fulsome support of creative businesses.
  • People and Culture: support a team that includes students, artist relationships and customer service.

The Ideal Candidate:

The ideal candidate has an interest in leveraging enterprise for social impact and the ability to apply this thinking across scales: from the shop floor to supporting member artists business development, to the broader development of creative revenue for the Centre. This will require an innovative, growth mindset, adaptability to change, and exceptional relational skills. An interest in craft and the creative sector is crucial.

Skills & Experience:

  • Strategic thinker, with a specific focus on providing business growth opportunities and merchandising strategies
  • Retail management: in person and or digital
  • Strong record of customer service and relationship management skills
  • Financial record management including inventory, record of sales and artist proceeds
  • Able to scope and execute projects
  • Digital and social media experience
  • Excellent verbal, written communication and presentation skills
  • Team and task delegation
  • Strong analytical skills: business opportunities and industry trends
  • Innovative and creative thinker
  • Technical proficiency and agility - both for organizational operations and artist supports

Assets:

  • Degree or diploma in relevant field
  • Knowledge of Lightspeed point of sale system
  • Nonprofit or community impact experience
  • Online marketing experience
  • Experience working with rural, isolated, Indigenous, and marginalized communities

Work Environment:

The Centre's mandate is to promote excellence in craft and design, both professional and recreational, through education and training. The Centre is an integral and leading force within the Island craft sector, supporting the development of the industry by providing a variety of services and programs designed to enhance the creative, commercial and financial performance of the sector.

Work is on site at the office and retail setting in downtown Sydney. Some travel within Cape Breton and or Nova Scotia is required. This position requires flexible work hours, including some evening and weekend work.

Compensation:

  • Salary: $45,000-$52,000 depending on relevant experience
  • Benefits include paid vacation, holidays, paid sick leave, extra paid time off from December 24 to January 2, paid administrative break in August, and health insurance benefits.
