About Us

The Registered Nurses' Union Newfoundland & Labrador (RNU) is the official trade union for 5,800 registered nurses (RNs) and nurse practitioners (NPs) in Newfoundland and Labrador. Over the years, RNU has transformed from an organization focused mainly on negotiating contracts into a union that champions to protect the health care system, the role of the RN, NPs, and the rights of patients, clients and residents. Through advocacy research and education, RNU has worked to improve the health care system and enhance the livelihood, safety and well-being of our membership.

Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated individual to play a crucial role in advancing the organization's vision by conducting in-depth research and analysis. The incumbent will develop and implement policy and educational programs that align with the organization's strategic goals and performance objectives. This position will require significant problem-solving skills and understanding of a wide range of research techniques and methodologies.

SPECIFIC DUTIES:

Research and Policy Development

· Monitors and analyzes local and national health care issues, legislative and regulatory developments, particularly with respect to nursing and union research;

· Coordinates and participates in research studies that may affect health care and/or the nursing profession, RNU members or the union;

· Represents the RNU on policy development initiatives at the provincial or national level;

· Develops policies and position statements for review and approval by the Board of Directors;

· Researches and prepares briefs for presentation to government and other bodies on policy initiatives that may affect nurses and health care;

· Represents the RNU on Research Committees at local and/or national level;

· Consults with counterparts to identify and understand emergent issues of concern to RNU members or the union; and

· Coordinates, monitors and analyzes RNU initiated member and public polling.

· Education Development

· Develops and coordinates a member focused education plan using a variety of delivery techniques;

· Develops and participates in education sessions as required;

· Develops education tools, including manuals, booklets, handouts or other materials;

· Develops educational content for newsletters, web site and other communication tools;

· Represents the RNU on Education Committees at local and/or national level;

· Maintains the RNU resource and reference centre; and

· Identifies and recommends innovative educational initiatives, trends, or opportunities to the Board of Directors.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

· Completion of a masters degree in a relevant discipline, or completion of an undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline with an equivalent combination of experience and other training;

· At least two years experience in research and policy development, preferably related to health care and/or nursing;

· At least two years experience in adult education;

· Ability to manage competing priorities and practice time-management techniques in order to meet deadlines and multiple projects;

· Exceptional written and oral communications skills;

· Familiarity with using emerging technologies, particularly the use of multi-media methods to deliver educational programs;

· Able to work independently with minimum supervision while participating as a member of a team;

· While not required, experience working in an advocacy/union environment is an asset; and

· Ability to travel is required.
