FOR ABUSED WOMEN

Position: Child and Youth Counsellor

Tearmann Society for Abused Women is a feminist organization which operates a 24 hour, 15 bed emergency shelter for abused women and their children. The Child and Youth Counsellor reports to the Operations Manager and will work collaboratively with the Child and Youth Outreach Counsellor to provide support and programs for children and youth residing at Tearmann House.

Job Description

The Child and Youth Counsellor will work collaboratively with the Children and Youth Services Outreach Counsellor and House Counsellors with the following tasks and activities:

Planning and carrying out daily activities for children and youth in the shelter

Facilitating small group work

Supporting Children and Youth through play and art

Creating and maintaining a safe and supportive environment for children and youth to share their feelings and experiences

Supporting children/youth of varying ages with differing needs.

Providing information re: Child's safety, building self-esteem,

Guiding child/youth in using conflict resolution and nonviolent methods of problem solving.

Exploring and identifying appropriate agencies and organizations that can assist in further supports for children and youth and family.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

University degree in Social Work, Community Studies or other related field, and/or equivalent combination of training and human services experience.

Experience working with children and/or youth

Demonstrated active listening skills

Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to manage time effectively and complete tasks in an efficient manner.

Demonstrated ability to work independently.

Basic knowledge of issues relating to family violence

Ability to be flexible with work hours.
