About Us

Modern, effective and professional, the Canadian Forces (CF) comprises men and women who have the skills, knowledge and experience to effectively fulfil a number of important roles at home and abroad.

The Canadian Forces is composed of three elements: the Navy, the Army and the Air Force. Each element looks after issues that come up in, or on, one of our planet's main environments - the sea, land and air.

What We Do

Whether it's peacekeeping, emergency civil support or combat roles, the Canadian Forces has assumed many roles during its illustrious history. Currently, more than 3 000 Canadian soldiers, sailors and Air Force personnel are deployed overseas on operational missions. At home and abroad, the Canadian Forces serves the country by defending its values, interests and sovereignty.

Regular and Reserve Forces

The Canadian Forces consists of the Regular Force and Reserve Force. The integrated force of full-time and part-time military personnel provides a multipurpose, combat-capable armed force.

Members of the Regular Force face exciting challenges, constantly learn new skills and have unlimited career possibilities.

The primary role of the Reserve Force is to provide augmentation, sustainment and support to deployed forces, and also to provide a base for expansion or mobilization. In recent years, reservists have made substantial contributions to Canada's international efforts and domestic relief operations. In some cases, the Reserve Force also provides for specific roles and missions not performed by the Regular Force.

The Primary Reserve is divided into:

  • The Naval Reserve,
  • The Militia or Army Reserve,
  • The Air Reserve,
  • The Communication Reserve,
  • The Health Services Reserve.

There are approximately:

  • 62 000 Regular Force members;
  • 25 000 Reserve Force members, including 4 000 Rangers.

Commitment

Non-Commissioned Members will commit for three years. Officers will commit for between three and nine years, depending on the occupation and the entry plan. At the end of your contract, you may choose to renew your commitment or leave the CF.

Non-Commissioned Members

There are 73 occupations available in the Regular Force and the Reserves for Non-Commissioned Members. Your training will be specific for the occupation in which you are enrolled. To be eligible you should have at least completed grade 10 or Secondary III (Quebec), however a high school diploma is preferred. You must be a Canadian citizen (Landed Immigrants may apply to the Reserves). Some entry programs have additional academic prerequisites.

Officers

Officers oversee the activities conducted by the sailors, soldiers or air personnel either on a base or on board a ship. We have 32 officer careers in the CF with posts in Canada or overseas.
